50 『Reading into Photography : Selected Essays, 1959-1980』その1

前回まで、英語の写真論のアンソロジー『Photography in print : writings from 1816 to the present』を紹介しましたが、引き続き、英語の写真論のアンソロジー『Reading into Photography : Selected Essays, 1959-1980』を紹介したいと思います。
　

『Photography in print』は1981年の出版、『Reading into Photography』は1982年の出版ということで、出版時期はあまり変わりません。前者が写真の歴史全体を見渡そうとするものであるのに対し、後者は（当時における）現代寄りのセレクションになっているといえるでしょう。
　

なぜ本書が手元にあるかというと、日本でも言及されることが多い展覧会『ニュー・トポグラフィクス』の序論が収録されていたからだと思います。本書の存在は知っていたものの日本では見つけることができず、ニューヨークでRobert Adamsの『Beauty in Photography』などとともに買ってきた、という記憶があります。

が、確かめてみたところ、同時期にそれらの本を持っていなかったようなので、どうもそれは美化された記憶であり、じっさいには後日、日本から注文して入手したのでしょう。

$17.95と書いてありますので、為替レートが円高になっていった1980年代、1ドル150円として約2700円、あまり安くはありませんね。とはいえ、当時の洋書店のレートはかなり高かったはずなので、それに比べたら送料を入れても割安感があったのでしょう。注文書を国際郵便で送り、支払いはクレジットカード、届くのを待つという行為のワクワク感も大きかった気がします。
　

ついついどうでもいい思い出話を綴ってしまいましたが、そんな時代に入手したということです。

ところで、本書を出版したのは、『Photography in print』を1988年に再版したのと同じUniversity of New Mexico Pressです。写真論のアンソロジーに大きな役割を果たした出版局だといえそうです。
