Tokyo Film Camera Style vol.46

Newton’s law of universal gravitation states that every particle in the universe attracts every other particle with a force proportional to mass and distance. Replace “particle” with “Leica M” and you’ll get an explanation as to why you so many Leica M cameras in Tokyo. They seem to have their own enhanced gravity based on density and proximity.  


Here are a few I encountered one weekend in February.

 

ニュートンの万有引力の法則によると、宇宙に存在するあらゆる粒子は、質量と距離に比例した力で互いに引き合う、とされています。この「粒子」を「M型ライカ」に置き換えてみれば、なぜ東京でこれほど多くのライカMを目にするのか、その理由が見えてくるかもしれません。密度と近接性によって強化された、独自の重力を持っているかのようです。

 

2月のある週末に出会った数台をご紹介します。

 

 

1.

Leica M6TTL + Summicron 50mm F2 + Voigtlander VC Meter II

 

The Japan Leica Users Group (JLUG) holds an exhibition every two years- I stopped by the gallery in Shibuya to see the show. While most members have a digital Leica, there were a few film Ms.  A member in the gallery showed me her M6TTL with a classic 50mm f2 lens. 

 

日本ライカユーザーズグループ（JLUG）は2年に一度、展覧会を開いています。今回、その展示を見に渋谷のギャラリーへ足を運びました。会員の多くはデジタルライカ派ですが、フィルムのM型を使っている人もちらほら。中でも印象的だったのは、クラシックな50mm F2レンズを付けたM6TTLを持つ女性でした。やっぱりかっこいい。

 

2.

Leica CL + Voigtlander Heliar 50mm F1.5 S.C.


At the same JLUG show a young man had this CL with a Voigtlander 50mm.  

Looks like a nice setup- very compact, with a fast lens. 

 

同じJLUGの展示で、若い男性がフォクトレンダーの50mmレンズを付けたCLを持っていました。コンパクトですがレンズはしっかり明るく、なかなかいいセットだなという印象でした。

 

3.

Leica M6 + Summiliux 50mm F1.4 

 

Later that day in Roppongi at a different photography exhibition I ran into a young man with this well-loved chrome M6.  He told me it was his father’s camera. I love legacy cameras like this. And seeing such a basic, solid setup- It’s all you’d ever really need!  Notice how the Leica “dot” logo is silver, and not the usual red. He said that for a while he had some tape over the logo, and, when removing the tape all the red paint came off. Looks rather cool, actually! 

 

その日六本木で別の写真展を見ていたときに、使い込まれたクロームのM6を持つ若い男性に出会いました。聞くと、それは彼のお父さんから譲り受けたカメラだそうです。

 

こういうシンプルで堅実なセットを見るのが好きです。正直、これがあれば十分だと思えます。よく見るとライカの「赤い点」は赤ではなく、シルバーになっています。理由を聞くと、以前しばらくロゴの上にテープを貼っていて、剥がしたときに赤い塗装が一緒に取れてしまったそうです。でもこれがまた、意外とかっこいい…。

 

4.

Leica M7 + Summicron 35mm F2 ASPH

 

In the same gallery I met a young man with an M7 in near-mint condition. Black Leica M bodies are deservedly popular and legendary photographic machines- but there’s something special about chrome ones, too.

 

同じギャラリーで、ミントコンディションと言っていいほどのM7を持った若い男性にも出会いました。ブラックのライカMボディは人気も実力も文句なしの名機ですが、クロームボディにはまた別の魅力があります。

 

5.

Leica M2 + Summicron 35mm F2 + Akagivit rapid winder

 

An American photographer visiting Tokyo had this customized M2 around his neck.  The body- a rare push-button-rewind version- had been repainted black. Matches his Summicron lens.  To round out his setup he added an “Akagivit” trigger winder- a remake of the Leica Leicavit.

 

東京を訪れていたアメリカ人フォトグラファーは、カスタムされたM2を首から下げていました。希少なプッシュボタン巻き戻し仕様のボディはブラックに塗り替えられていて、ズミクロンのレンズともよく合っています。仕上げに装着されていたのは、「アカギビット」トリガーワインダー。ライカのレイカビットを再現したものです。

 

6.

Leica M3J + Noctilux 35mm F1.2

 

Talk about RARE.  This M3J was released in 2006 by Leica Camera Japan- only 200 were made and this is probably the only one of those that gets daily use! Its owner, a young photo student, recently acquired a brand-new 35mm Noctilux lens. Amazing….

 

まさにレア中のレア！このライカM3Jは2006年にライカカメラジャパンから発売されたモデルで、生産数はわずか200台。その中でも、日常的に使われている個体は、おそらくこれだけでしょう。オーナーは若い写真学生で、最近なんと新品のノクティルックス35mmを手に入れたといいます。驚くしかない……。

 

7.

Fujifilm GW690II + TTARTISAN M01 On-Camera Flash

 

Not a Leica! But of course that’s fine. This massive Fuji rangefinder has a TTArtisan  MO1 flash on it. This tiny (and super cheap!) flash is designed to look like a 35mm film cannister. 

 

レインジファインダー、ライカではないですがそれはそれで全然OKです！
この富士フイルムの大きなレンジファインダーには、TTArtisanのMO1フラッシュが載っています。35mmフィルムのパトローネ風デザインの、小さくて（しかも驚くほど安い！）フラッシュです。かわいい。

 


8.

Minolta TC-1

 

A legendary high-class point and shoot from the 90’s- - seen here with the rare half-case and neck strap! As a fellow neck strap camera carrier, this is quite appealing.  As is the TC-1’s 28mm lens- a lens some say is the greatest 28mm ever made.

 

1990年代を代表する、伝説的な高級コンパクトカメラ。しかも今回は、希少なハーフケースとネックストラップ付き。自分もネックストラップ派として、これはかなり刺さります。ミノルタTC-1の28mmレンズもまた魅力的で、「史上最高の28mmレンズだ」と言う人もいるほどです。

 

These cameras are from but two days in Tokyo’s photo universe. Curious to see what cameras come into my orbit over the next month…

 

これらのカメラは、東京の“写真宇宙”の中で、たった2日間に出会ったもの。次の1か月で、いったいどんなカメラが僕の軌道に引き寄せられてくるのか──楽しみです。
