Tokyo Film Camera Style vol.45: TABF2025

That’s a lot of acronyms.  That’s short for:

Tokyo Camera Style at Tokyo Art Book Fair 2025 for Photo & Culture Tokyo.

 

Held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, 2025 marked the TABF’s 15th anniversary. Thanks to its growing popularity, both domestic and international, this year the fair was held over two weekends in December for the first time. 

While the T3 Photo Festival’s Photobook Marche is photo-centered, the annual TABF brings together hundreds of artists, publishers, and thousands upon thousands of art lovers into a celebration of all sorts of printed, creative material. Photography in print amounted for a of what was available there- and likewise, many of the attendees had some interesting cameras with them.  Here are just a few I saw at the fair on December 20th.

 

 

東京都現代美術館で開催された東京アートブックフェア（TABF）は、2025年で15周年を迎えました。国内外での人気の高まりを受け、今年は初めて12月の2週にわたって前期・後期で開催されました。

 

10月にレポートしたT3フォトフェスティバルのフォトブック・マルシェが写真中心なのに対して、年に一度のTABFは、さまざまなジャンルの何百ものアーティストや出版社、そして何千人ものアートファンが集まり、あらゆる印刷物と創作物を祝福する場です。しかし会場に並ぶ作品の中でも、写真プリントはかなりの割合を占めており、来場者の首や肩には、なかなか興味深いカメラがぶら下がっていました。以下は、12月20日（Week2）に会場で見かけたカメラのほんの一部です。

 

1.

Nikon F3 + Voigtlaner 40mm F2 Ultron 


In the world of Nikon F3s the standard eye-level finder is somewhat of a rarity. The HP finder is far more common- for reasons of ease I completely understand but personally, I think the shorter eye-level one makes the camera look nicer. Even rarer than an eye-level finder is an all brass bottom plate. The owner told me the previous owner had polished off all the paint! I guess this way you don’t have to worry about scratching the original finish….?

 

ニコンF3の世界では、標準のアイレベルファインダーは意外とレアです。HPファインダーの方が圧倒的に多い。その理由もよく分かりますが、個人的には背の低いアイレベルの方が、見た目が断然いいと思います。

 


それ以上に珍しいのが、真鍮むき出しのボトムプレート。オーナー曰く、前の持ち主が塗装をすべて磨き落としてしまったらしい。これなら、元の塗装に傷がつく心配はない……ということなのでしょうか？

 

2.

Fujifilm GA645zi

 

One of the TABF staff members had this glorious Fuji, seen here in the optional “champagne gold” finish that so many manufacturers offered back in the late 1990s.  A gorgeous camera- his is in mint condition.  A perfect medium format point and shoot!

 

TABFスタッフの一人が使っていたのが、この素晴らしい富士フイルムGA645zi。1990年代後半に各社がこぞって採用していた、オプションの「シャンパンゴールド」仕上げです。状態はミントコンディション。まさに理想的な「中判コンパクトカメラ」です。

 

3.

Top: Leica M4 + 21mm F3.4 Super Angulon

Bottom: Leica M2 + modified 35mm F1.4 Summilux Steel-Rim

 

A young photographer at the fair had this pair of chrome Leicas around his neck. The lens hoods are both remakes of Leica hoods manufactured in China. That is a much more affordable option! The original hoods – particularly the bottom one- can be priced nearly as much as some camera bodies, today! 

 

会場にいた若い写真家は、このクロームのライカ2台を首から下げていました。レンズフードはいずれも中国製の復刻版で、ずっと手頃な選択肢です。そもそもそのオリジナルのフードは、今ではボディ並みの価格が付くこともあるから…。

 

4.

Top: Asahi Pentax Spotmatic + 28mm F3.5 Super Takumar

Bottom: Minolta X-570 + 58mm F2 Helios-44M

 

Another camera pairing- this photographer from America had an ever-classic Spotmatic with a Minolta X-570. The Helios-44M lens is attached by a Minolta SR to M42 adapter.  A solid, capable set of cameras!


もう一組のカメラ二刀流。アメリカから来た写真家で、定番のスポットマチックとミノルタX-570を携えていました。ヘリオス44Mは、ミノルタSR→M42アダプター経由で装着されています。堅実で、実力十分な組み合わせです。

Due to its popularity and venue, the Tokyo Art Book Fair is quite crowded on a Saturday afternoon! Sometimes, in amongst the visitors random, brand-related camera encounters are possible.  While I was chatting with a young photographer from Germany who had a Hexar RF around his neck a young photographer from China with its auto-focus sibling happened to come by- and kindly let me get a snap of their cameras together. Whether over gear or books, these kinds of personal, real-life encounters are what book fairs are all about…

 

人気と会場の特性もあり、土曜の午後のTABFはかなりの混雑になります。そんな中で、ブランドつながりの偶然の「カメラ遭遇」が起きることもあります。ヘキサーRFを下げたドイツ人の若い写真家と話していたところ、オートフォーカス兄弟機のヘキサーAFを持った中国人写真家が通りかかり、快く2台並べて撮らせてくれました。機材でも本でも、こうしたリアルで個人的な出会いこそ、ブックフェアの醍醐味です。

その日は、ペンタックスをたくさん見ました。

Pentax 67II + SMC Pentax 67 105mm F2.4 

 

I have a lot of respect for this young woman- carrying around a massive camera like this in amongst the crowds at the fair couldn’t have been easy. And yet! What a camera. I like seeing people (and being a person) going out into the world with one over their shoulder. A marvelous, eminently capable piece of photo equipment. 

 

この若い女性には心から敬意を表したい。こんな巨大なカメラを、混雑した会場で持ち歩くのは決して楽ではないからです。それでも——なんてカメラなのでしょう。肩に大きなカメラを担いで世界に出ていく人を見るのが好きだし、自分もそうありたい。素晴らしく、そして圧倒的に頼もしい写真機材です。

 

7.

Pentax LX + SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.4

 

A young Swiss photographer had this chic LX over his shoulder- perfect bit of Pentax glass for the lens, too.  This is a camera I’ve never owned- but always sorely wanted. Maybe it’s not too late.  Over the years people have told me that Tokyo Camera Style has inspired them (or infected them) with a desire for cameras they’ve seen on it- - looks like I’m not immune to the magic, myself…

 

スイス出身の若い写真家が、この洒落たペンタックスLXを肩に掛けていました。レンズの選択も完璧。実はこのカメラ、私は一度も所有したことがありません。——でも、ずっと欲しかった！まだ遅くはないかもしれません。人に「Tokyo Camera Styleを見ると、欲しいカメラばかりで感染する」と言われることが何回もあるのですが……どうやら自分自身も免疫はなかったようです。

Pentax 17

 

Working down in size from the 67 to the LX- this is (obviously!) a Pentax 17, seen here loaded with a roll of Velvia 100!  Considering how good AND expensive that particular film is, a half-frame camera is a good way to go about shooting it.

 

ペンタックス67からペンタックスLX、さらにサイズダウンして——これは（言うまでもなく）ペンタックス17。いいね。しかもベルビア100が入っています！あのフィルムのクオリティと価格を考えると、ハーフサイズで使うのはとても賢い選択ですね。

 

 

9.

Asahi Pentax Spotmatic + Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28mm F3.5

 

One more Pentax!  Another Spotmatic- one showing a bit of character and wear and tear from a life of being enjoyed. Its current caretaker is a young woman- how nice that this camera can keep on giving pleasure and photos to people over the decades…

 

では、もう一台ペンタックス！使い込まれた風合いが魅力のスポットマチックです。今の持ち主は若い女性。何十年も人を楽しませ、写真を生み出し続けられる——そんなカメラであることが、なんとも嬉しいじゃないですか。

 

10.

Konica Genba Kantoku

 

A young photo student with a very cool and very orange, Koncia. Designed for worksite documentation, these super tough cameras are fantastic choices for a compact camera. They have great lenses, are near-indestructible, weatherproof, and I mean c’mon just LOOK at it. Konica had a spectacular run back in the 1990s! 

 

とてもクールで、とてもオレンジなコニカ現場監督を持っていたのは若い写真学生。工事現場用に設計されたこのカメラは、コンパクト機として最高の選択肢です。レンズは優秀、ほぼ壊れず、防塵防滴。そして見てください、このルックス。1990年代のコニカのラインアップは、やっぱり本当にすごかった。

 

These are just a few cameras seen that afternoon- Here’s to next year! 

 

来年のTABFも東京の街角も、どんなカメラと出会えるでしょうか。楽しみです！
