We’re in the final weeks of a long, hot summer, and it’s the time of year when the Tokyo Camera Club holds their annual group show- this year it was held in the Hikarie building in Shibuya from September 12 - 15 In addition to showcasing photographs by the club’s members there are talk panels and booths promoting various prefectures around Japan. Additionally several camera and digital imaging companies have booths. This was the Tokyo Camera Club’s 13th exhibition- and the first one I had some involvement with. My summer vacation homework was a commission to make some photos for display at the Leica x Panasonic booth in the commercial area of the show.  I made my second visit to Hikarie on Monday, September 15, and, despite the fact that nearly everything in the show was taken with a digital camera, hoped that I might be able to encounter enough film cameras to share with you here in this column. As you’re about to see, yes, I did. 

 

長く暑い夏もいよいよ終盤。東京カメラ部が毎年恒例のグループ展を開催する季節です。今年の展覧会は9月12日から15日まで渋谷ヒカリエで行われました。会員の作品展示に加え、トークイベントや全国各地の観光PRブース、さらにはカメラやデジタル映像機器メーカーのブースも並びます。

 

今回で13回目を迎える東京カメラ部展ですが、私が関わるのは今回が初めてでした。夏休みの宿題のような形で、会場内のライカ×パナソニックブースに展示する写真を撮影するという依頼をいただきました。


9月15日（月）に2度目の来場をし、デジタルカメラで撮影された作品がほとんどの展示会ながら、フィルムカメラにどれだけ出会えるかを期待して歩いてみました。結果はご覧の通り！すぐ、出会えました。

 

Shibuya station and its immediate surroundings is a dense, chaotic mess of streets populated by a mass of people. Add in multi-year construction work and the highest number of foreign tourists in history, well, it’s a station I like to avoid.  Thankfully the walk south from Meijijingu-Mae station is pleasant and mostly downhill. And today, within minutes of exiting the station, I spotted a rather rare Rolleiflex camera. 

 

渋谷駅とその周辺は人混みと雑多な街並みでごった返しています。さらに長期の再開発工事、そして過去最多の外国人観光客数……正直、私はあまり近づきたくない駅です。幸い、明治神宮前駅から南へ下る道は快適で、ほどなく珍しいローライフレックスを発見しました。

 

1.

Rollei magic Ⅱ


This is a Rollei Magic II, an automatic 6x6 TLR from the 1960s. While the first Rollei Magic model was auto-only, the II features an manual control option. Both versions are relatively rare- and to see one out being used on the streets is almost unimaginable. I have a hunch that this was the only Rollei Magic II on earth being used at that moment. 

 

これは1960年代製の「ローライマジックⅡ」という6×6判の自動二眼レフです。初代モデルは自動専用でしたが、Ⅱ型ではマニュアル操作も可能になりました。どちらのモデルも希少で、実際に街中で使用されている姿を見るのは奇跡的です。おそらくその瞬間、世界で唯一稼働していたローライマジックⅡだったのではないでしょうか。

Leica M6 TTL  LHSA edition +  Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 Steel Rim


Speaking of rare cameras- soon after the Magic Rollei I met a man with a LHSA edition Leica M6. This Black Paint Special Edition is gorgeous. Especially with that lens, the current Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 Steel Rim. I’m sure I’ve said this here many times over the years but I’m a big fan of silver lenses on black Leica M bodies. 

 

さらに希少なカメラとの出会いが続きます。次に出会ったのは「LHSAエディション」のライカM6TTL。ブラックペイントの特別モデルで、とても美しい個体でした。しかも装着されていたレンズは現行の「ズミルックスM 35mm f1.4 スチールリム」。以前から繰り返し書いていますが、私は黒ボディにシルバーのレンズを組み合わせるのが大好きです。

Leica MP + Voigtlander ULTRON Vintage Line 35mm F2 Aspherical Type II


Getting closer to Hikarie I spotted yet another Leica M- this time a new chrome Leica MP, seen here in the hands of a young man visiting from France. The lens is a Voigtlander ULTRON Vintage Line 35mm F2 Aspherical Type II. 

 

渋谷ヒカリエに近づくと、今度は新型クロームのライカMPを発見。持っていたのはフランスから来ていた若い男性で、レンズはフォクトレンダー「ULTRON Vintage Line 35mm F2 Aspherical Type II」でした。

 

And if that MP wasn’t enough (well, it is for 35mm format needs), he had another rangefinder over his shoulder:


そしてこのライカMPに加え、彼の肩にはもう一台のレンジファインダーが！

Fujifilm GW690 Ⅱ

 

This is a Fuji GW690 II, a legendary 6x9 rangefinder. Together these make an interesting travel combo- hope he has a nice trip. 

 

これは伝説的な中判レンジファインダー「FUJIFILM GW690 II」。6×9判という迫力のフォーマットです。旅行にこの2台を持ってくるとは面白い組み合わせですね。良い旅を！

 

I soon arrived at the Tokyo Camera Club exhibition. My photos for the Leica / Panasonic booth were taken with a Leica SL3S and an APO-Summicron-SL 35mm f2 lens and a Panasonic Lumix S1R II with a Lumix S 24-60mm f2.8 zoom. This was my first real experience shooting digital for a wall of prints like this- I learned a quite a bit from my time with these cameras. 


ほどなくして東京カメラ部展の会場に到着しました。私がライカ／パナソニックブース用に撮影した写真は「ライカSL3S + APO-Summicron-SL 35mm f2」と「パナソニックLUMIX S1R II + LUMIX S 24-60mm F2.8」という組み合わせによるもの。壁面展示向けに本格的にデジタルで撮影するのは初めての経験で、色々とデジタルカメラについて学びがありました。

 


Obviously at any event run by a group called “Tokyo Camera Club” you are going to see a lot of cameras. Nearly everyone in the large, well-attended venue had a camera over their shoulder. Most were digital, and I saw everything from digital Ricoh GRs to Nikon Zs, several different digital Leica M models, and one massive Phase One setup. Still there were some film cameras- like this, another Leica M setup:

 

「東京カメラ部」という名前のイベントだけあって、会場内はカメラだらけ。来場者のほとんどがカメラを肩から提げており、デジタルのリコーGRやニコン Z、複数のデジタルM型ライカ、そして巨大なフェーズワンまで見かけました。もちろんフィルム機もいくつか。そのひとつがこちらです。

Leica M-A Black chrome + Summilux-M Asph. 50mm F1.4

 

This is a black chrome Leica M-A with a Summilux-M Asph. 50mm f1.4 lens. Sharp!

 

これはブラッククロームのライカM-Aに「ズミルックスM Asph. 50mm f1.4」を組み合わせたもの。カッコいいですね！

Nikon F3HP + NIKKOR 50mm F1.4


Another 50mm f1.4 lens- one attached to a Nikon F3HP. A venerable, classic setup! 

Does anyone know how many of these 50mm Nikkors have been made? I am genuinely curious- they have to be the most-produced lens in Ai mount history….

 

もうひとつの50mm F1.4レンズはニコン F3HPに装着されていました。歴史ある名機と定番の組み合わせですね。このニッコール50mmレンズは一体どれだけ生産されたのでしょうか？ AIマウント史上、最も生産数の多いレンズではないかと思います……。

Rolleiflex 2.8F +  Schneider Xenotar

 

Today’s camera style happens to start- and end- with a Rollei.  

This “Ni-Pachi” is a late, white-face Rolleifex 2.8F with a Schneider Xenotar lens. 

What’s more, it is in absolute mint-condition. That protective carry-case has done its job well!

 

さて、今回のカメラスタイルはローライで始まり、ローライで終わります。こちらの「ニッパチ」と呼ばれる後期型のローライフレックス2.8F（ホワイトフェイス）は、Schneider Xenotarレンズの搭載モデルです。レアな上に、状態はまさに新品同様。専用ケースがしっかり守ってくれていたようです！ナイス。
