Tokyo Film Camera Style vol.33

It’s been a hot summer, but I’ve encountered plenty of interesting cameras while out and about. This month’s TCS on PCT entry consists of mostly smaller than usual 35mm cameras.

 

暑い夏が続いていますが、外出先で面白いカメラにたくさん出会いました。今月の「Tokyo Film Camera Style」はほぼ、小さな35mmカメラが中心です。

 

1.

Leica M3 + Nikkor-H C・5cm F2


The largest of the five I’ll show you is this clean Leica M3:

I spotted it around the neck of a young man out on a Sunday afternoon date in Ueno Park. The lens is a Nikkor H.C. 5cm F2, attached via an L to M mount adapter. Interesting to see Nikon glass on Leicas!

 

今回紹介する5台の中で一番大きいのは、このきれいなライカM3です。日曜日の午後、上野公園で発見したこのライカM3のレンズはニッコールH・C 5cm F2です。ライカカメラにニコンレンズがついているのは面白いですね。

Leica Ⅲg + Summicron 50mm F2

+ Voigtlander double-shoe adapter

 

Speaking of 1950’s era Leicas, take a look at this Leica iiig setup.  Interestingly, despite being based on an older design this camera was actually released two years after the Leica M3. 

This one, fitted with a collapsible 50mm f2 Summicron lens, has a Leitz-Wetzlar shutter release accessory (I’m sorry, I don’t know which model) and a rare Voigtlander double-shoe adapter that allows him to mount a 5cm external finder and a Voigtlander VC Meter II to his camera.  Not only that, but the camera’s leather is olive drab. Rare setup- and not something I expected to randomly encounter stepping out of a sushi restaurant on a summer night in Yanaka.

 

1950年代のライカといえば、このライカⅢgのセットアップをご覧ください。興味深いことに、古い設計に基づいているにもかかわらず、ライカⅢgはM3の2年後に発売されました。ズミクロン50mm F2レンズを装着したこのカメラには、ライツ・ウェッツラーのシャッターレリーズ（すみません、どのモデルかわかりません）と、意外と珍しいフォクトレンダーのダブルシューアダプターが取り付けられており、5cmの外部ファインダーとフォクトレンダーVC Meter IIをカメラに取り付けることができます。またそれだけでなく、カメラのレザーはOlive drab（オリーブ・ドラブ）です！夏の夜、谷中の寿司屋から一歩外に出て、こんな光景に出くわすとは思いませんでした。

OLYMPUS-PEN F + F.Zuiko Auto-S 38mm F1.8

 

This is a sharp looking Olympus Pen F- that glossy black paint makes an already beautifully designed camera look even better. Yoshihisa Maitani was a genius. The lens is a Zuiko Auto-S 38mm f1.8. Seen at a photo exhibition in a warehouse near Osaki station.

 

大崎駅近くの倉庫で開催された写真展にてこのオリンパス・ペンFを見つけました。光沢のある黒の塗装は、ただでさえ美しいデザインが際立っています。オリパスのデザイナー、米谷美久氏は天才です。レンズはF.Zuiko Auto-S 38mm F1.8。です

OLYMPUS-PEN

 

At that same exhibition I saw another Maitani creation- the first version of the Olympus Pen from 1959. In addition to their visual design, simplicity of these cameras is very attractive. I hope that the young man who owns this one enjoys it for many years.

 

同じ写真展会場にて、米谷美久の作品である、1959年発売のオリンパス・ペンと出会いました。見た目のデザインもさることながら、シンプルさがとても魅力的です。このカメラを手にした若者には、末永く楽しんでほしいものです！

 

The smallest of this set of cameras is this mint-condition Rollei 35:

最後は、今月出会った一番小さなカメラである、新品に近い状態のローライ35です。

It belongs to weekend photographer Hiroaki Nakashima- the wall in the background has quite a few prints made with negatives shot though this camera.  I say “weekend photographer” because that’s how he describes himself AND because it’s an accurate description. He begins his weekend by printing photos in his darkroom every Friday night. He walks around Tokyo and takes two rolls of black and white film each Saturday and two each Sunday. Each Sunday evening, he develops that weekend’s film, filing the negatives in preparation for the following Friday’s darkroom session. What a great process.  

 

Finding your balance with photography is a key way to get the most out of it.

 

同じ写真展でこのカメラを見つけました。これは写真家であるNakashima Hiroakiさんのものです。カメラ越しに見える壁には、彼がこのカメラで撮ったプリントの数々が飾られています。 彼は「私が週末写真家だ」と言いました。毎週金曜日の夜、Nakashimaさんは暗室で写真をプリントします。土曜日と日曜日は東京を歩き回り、1日2本の白黒フィルムを撮ります。そして、帰ったその日曜日の夜、2日間で撮ったフィルムを現像し、ネガをファイリングして翌週の金曜日の暗室作業に備えるのだといいます。素晴らしいプロセスだ。 


写真とのバランスを見つけることは、写真を最大限に楽しむための重要な鍵ですね。
