the biggest Leica M2

 

実は、今回は「TCS（Tokyo Camera Style）」ではなく「WCS（Wetzlar Camera Style）」です。 
10月下旬、ドイツのウェツラーに本社を構えるライカカメラ社が、毎年恒例のイベント「Celebration of Photography」に私を招待してくれました。 工場や資料館の見学、インタビュー、そして多くの興味深い人たちとの出会いがありました。

ご想像の通り、特にライカM6の再発売の発表会が執り行われ、多くのライカカメラを目にすることになりました。今回は、フィルム用のMセットアップに焦点を当てます。

 

This month's TCS is actually WCS: Wetzlar Camera Style.  In late October Leica Camera, with its headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany, kindly invited me to participate in their annual Celebration of Photography event.  I'll be sharing more about this experience here soon, but my time there included  factory and archive tours, interviews, and the chance to meet a lot of interesting people. As you can imagine, especially with their rerelease of the M6, I also saw a lot of Leica cameras. For this entry I'm focusing on film M setups.


最初の「カメラ」は、私が今まで見た中で最も大きなライカM2！

この木製の大きなレプリカは、プロモーション活動に使用されたそうです。この部屋はライカカメラアーカイブスで、数台のカメラが展示されていました。私たちツアー客がこのようにポーズをとることを許されたのは、ライカの寛大さと、おそらく私がその価値を知らなかったことの証でしょう…。

 

This first "camera" is the biggest M2 I've ever seen- these large, wooden replicas were used for promotional activities. This room, the Leica camera archives, had a few on display. That our tour group was allowed to pose with them like this is a testament to both Leica's magnanimity- and probably my ignorance of their value.

Leica MP Hermès Edition& Summicron-M 35mm F2 Asph.

これは珍しいエルメスのライカMPで、日本から来たモデルで女優のKIKIさんのものです。

このカメラは2003年から持っているそうで、500台しか作られなかったこのキットの中で、彼女のものが最もよく使われているそうです。このように希少なカメラが愛されるのは素晴らしいことです。

 

This is a rare Hermes Leica MP- it belongs to KIKI, a model and actress from Japan who was also in Wetzlar for the event.  She's had this camera since 2003- there were only five hundred of these kits made, and hers is undoubtedly the most used of them all. Great to see rare editions like this actually being loved this way.

Leica M3 Olive & Summaron 35mm F2.8, Voigtlander VC Meter II

 

日本の関東カメラ（神奈川県川崎市）でオリーブにペイントしたという、ライカM3です。オーナーはシンガポール人でした。レンズは「メガネ」付きのズマロン35ミリ、そしてフォクトレンダーVC Meter IIを装着しています。グリーンのカメラを見るのはやっぱりいつも楽しいものです。

 

A Singaporean photographer had this with him- it's a Leica M3 that he had painted olive drab by Kanto Camera in Japan. The lens is a goggled Summaron, and he's got the Voigtlander VC Meter II on top. Always nice to see a green camera.

Leica M6 Black & Summicron-M 28mm F2, Contax TLA200 Flash

 

ウェッツラーでは使い込まれたライカM6をたくさん見かけました。これはアメリカの若い写真家、ジョー・グリアーの愛機です。擦れや傷、黒いロゴに加えて、28mmレンズとコンタックスTLA200フラッシュが付いています。このフラッシュはかなり人気があり、価格もそれなりにしますね。

 

I saw a lot of well-worn Leica M6s in Wetzlar- this one that belongs to Joe Greer, a young photographer from America. In addition to scuffs and scrapes and a black dot it's also got a 28mm lens and a Contax TLA200 flash. These flashes have gotten quite popular- and with prices to match.

これもライカM6ですが、このように巻き上げレバーがM3用のものに交換されているのを何度か見ました。

 

This is another used M6- I saw a few like this were the advance lever had been swapped out for an M3 style one.

 

 

 

再発売のライカM6発表イベントの後、プレス関係者はライカクラシックストアに招待され、新しいカメラとレンズを実際に体験することができました。この日の午後、会場にいたのはほんの一部です。

ライカM6のボディは、1984年から2002年の間に17万5000台が製造されたそうです。クラシックモデルもニューM6も長生きして、これからもたくさんのフィルムや人、場所と出会えることを祈っています。

 

After the new M6 announcement event, press were invited into the Leica Classics store where they were able to experience the new camera and lens in person. These are just a few that were in the room that afternoon.  175,000 M6 bodies were originally made between 1984 and 2002. There are still a lot of them out there- so here's to both the classic models and the new M6s living long lives- seeing a lot more film and people and places well into the future.
