Tokyo Film Camera Style vol.28

As winter ends more and more people are out with their cameras—here are a few that I’ve spotted in Tokyo in early spring. 

 

冬の気配が薄れるにつれ、カメラを持つ人々が街中に増えてきます。この3月はまた面白いカメラと出会うことができました！

 

1.

Yashica Electro 35 + Color-Yashinon DX 45mm F1.7

 

This is a rare- in Tokyo- Yashica Electro 35. These wonderfully named Yashicas are a staple of American antique stores and flea markets but for some reason I NEVER see them in shops in Tokyo, much less on the streets like this. I suspect that consumer-grade cameras of this era were either replaced with newer models and, unlike Canon and Nikons, tossed out or forgotten. It’s nice to see this one is still being enjoyed!

 

東京ではなかなかレアな「ヤシカ エレクトロ35」です。このカメラはアメリカのアンティーク・ショップではよく見かけるのですが、東京のカメラ屋や街角ではあまり見かけないですね。この時代の「一般ユーザー向けのカメラ」は、キヤノンやニコンの名機と違って、新しい機種に買い換えられたり、捨てられたり、忘れられたりしたのではないでしょうか。今でもこの1台がまだ楽しまれているのは嬉しいことですね。

Mamiya 645 Pro + Mamiya-Sekor C 35mm F3.5 N

 

While we’re on the subject of rarely-seen cameras, here’s a Mamiya 645 I spotted at Yushima Shrine. 645 format is underrated- and this Mamiya series is a good, affordable way to get into it. This one has the winder grip accessory. 

 

めったに見られないカメラ繋がりで、先日湯島天神で見つけたマミヤ645プロを紹介します。645フォーマットは過小評価されている気がしますが、このマミヤの中判シリーズは手頃な値段で645フォーマットを楽しむことができます。このカメラには「ワインダーグリップ」というアクセサリーが付いているのも特徴です。

Leica R7 + Summicron-R 50mm F2

 

Another rarely-seen camera: a Leica R7. This one, with a 50mm F2 Summicron-R lens, was around the neck of a French man enjoying Ameyokocho in Ueno. Personally, the Leica R series is one which I’ve always been fond of but haven’t ever actually used. I have peeked through a few R body finders- since these SLRs let you see directly through Leica glass the world actually looks a little better than it does with your own eyes…

 

もう一台、めったに出会えないカメラであるライカR7を紹介します。上野のアメ横撮影を楽しんでいたフランス人男性の首にかけられていたR7には、ズミクロンR50mm F2のレンズが付けられていました。ライカRシリーズは個人的にずっと好きで気になってはいるものの、実際に使ったことはありません。しかしこれまでいくつかのRボディのファインダーを覗いてきた感想として、ライカの一眼レフは、実際に自分の目で見るよりも、ライカのガラス越しの世界の方が少し良く見える気がします。

Leica M3 + Voigtlander NOKTON 50mm F1.5

 

Seen on a pleasant afternoon near Ueno: a well-worn Leica M3 with a Voigtlander 50mm lens.  It’s such a classic camera- one that, fashion-wise, goes well with anything from a suit to an army jacket. Or, in this case, a python-patterned coat. 

 

良い午後に上野の街角で見かけた、よく使い込まれたライカM3とフォクトレンダー50mmレンズのコンビ。M3のデザインはクラシックなので、ファッション的にはスーツにもアーミージャケットにもなんでも似合うけど、このパイソン柄のコートとのペアリングがやっぱりかっこいいよね。

Leica M7 + Summilux 35mm F1.4 ASPH. (Pre-FLE)

 

Another chrome Leica- this time an M7, seen in Asakusa. It’s got a rare 35mm F1.4 Summilux Pre-FLE lens. AND the flower shaped lens hood which, I don’t know about you, looks pretty damn nice.  As a guy who spends a lot of time roaming around Asakusa with an M and a 35mm lens, I wholeheartedly approve. 

 

もう一台見つけた、シルバークロームのライカ。このM7とは浅草の裏道で出会いました。レンズはちょっとレアなズミルックス35mm F1.4 ASPH. Pre-FLEです。花形レンズフードも素敵。ライカMと35mmレンズを持って浅草をうろうろパシャパシャ歩き回ることが多い私としては、この組み合わせには親近感を覚えます。

"Daita" Camera & My Leica M6 + Summicron-M 35mm F2

 

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of enjoying dinner with Jesko von Oeynhausen, the head of Product Photo at Leica. As we sat down to eat, he told me he “bought a Leica” earlier that afternoon. Excited to see what he found, I chuckled as he pulled out this “Daita” rangefinder from his bag. In Japan, these chocolate tins appear in shops before Valentine’s Day every year-  there’s a TLR version, too (it makes a good pen stand for your desk).  The chocolates inside are wrapped to look like old Kodak film packages. The entire thing wavers somewhere between parody and copyright law but it’s obviously all in good fun. And, Jesko, enjoying the joke, took one back with him to Germany. I like knowing that one of these Daita “cameras” resides in the Leica headquarters in Wetzlar. 

 

数週間前、ライカ本社でプロダクト・フォトの責任者を務めるジェスコ・フォン・オインハウゼンさんとディナーを楽しみました。食事の席に着くと彼は「今日ライカを買ったよ」と言いながらバッグから「Daita」というレンジファインダーを取り出したので、私は思わず笑ってしまいました。

 

日本では毎年バレンタインデーの時期になると、このチョコレート缶が店頭に並びます。 中に入っているチョコレートは昔のコダックフィルムのパッケージのように包装されています。パロディと著作権のラインは難しいですが、ユーモアにあたたかみがあって面白いです。ジェスコさん自身がこのジョークを楽しんでいて、ドイツに持ち帰っていきました。ヴェッツラーにあるライカ本社に、この「ダイタの "カメラ"」があることを想像すると、つい微笑んでしまいます。
