Tokyo Film Camera Style vol.31

Normally, I try to space the themes of my columns in a consistent order: A book review, an exhibition report, a camera style feature, a travel guide, repeat.  

So even though it’s technically maybe too soon for another Camera Style column I wanted to show you some interesting camera setups that I encountered this past weekend.

 

このコラム連載は週ごとに「Tokyo Film Camera Style」「Exhibition Report」「Recommended photobook」「Tokyo Photo Guide」と順繰りに更新しているのですが、先日出会ったカメラがとても面白く、いてもたってもいられなかったので、今週もカメラスタイルをお送りします！

 

First, one thing which I’ll always enjoy about film cameras is the sheer variety in design and formats that they enjoy.  This interest is at the core for the nearly sixteen years I’ve been taking photos of other peoples’ cameras.  It’s because of this variety that individuals are able to put together – out of necessity, budget, or whims- an setup which reflects their interests and personality.  


まず、私がフィルムカメラについて常に楽しんでいることのひとつは、デザインとフォーマットの豊富さです。これは私が16年近く「カメラスタイル」を撮り続けてきた核心でもあります。フィルムカメラが多様であるからこそ、必要性と予算に応じて、あるいは「なんとなく」、自分の興味や個性を反映したセットアップを組み立てることができるのです。

 

1.

Voigtlander Bessa R2 + Summicron 35mm F2

 

This is an olive green (!) Voigtlander Bessa R2 with a 35mm f2 Summicron lens. It belongs to the Chinese photographer Feng Li, who recently visited Tokyo.  This camera takes me back! My first rangefinder was an olive green R2 just like this. I got mine at Lucky Camera in Shinjuku back in 2002 and it immediately changed how I approached photography, forever. However, for 

one reason or another, I ended up selling mine several years ago- and hadn’t held one since. And yet, picking up Feng’s for a moment that Saturday, I was immediately transported to my early 20s- the familiar feel of the Bessa in my hand unlocked memories from over twenty years ago… a feeling that I the cusp of something new and exciting- the feel of potential and exploration- You know, that feeling a new camera cans give you.  

It felt nice. 

 

オリーブグリーン（！）のフォクトレンダーBessa R2とズミクロン35mm F2のセットアップは、最近東京を訪れた中国人写真家Feng Liのものです。個人的な話になってしまいますが、このカメラは私を「昔」へと連れ戻してくれました。私が最初に手にしたレンジファインダーは、これと同じオリーブグリーンのR2でした。色が気に入って、2002年に新宿のラッキーカメラで購入し、すぐに私の写真に対するアプローチを一変させた一台です。でも、2008年頃になぜか覚えていませんが売ってしまったんですよね…。

 

それ以来、先週土曜日まで一度もオリーブのR2を手にしてきませんでした。手に馴染んだBessaの感触は、20年以上前の記憶を呼び覚まし......何か新しい、エキサイティングなことが始まりそうな感覚になりました。「可能性と探求の感覚」という感じです。自分にとって、新しいカメラが与えてくれる感覚はやっぱり、気持ちよかったですね。

Contax G2 + Planar 40mm F2

 

At Yushima Shrine I bumped into a young man with a Contax G2 & 40mm f2 Planar lens around his neck. He had a DSLR as well- which is something I see a lot; People enjoying digital and film at the same time. Nice way to do it.  

I enjoy how this goldish-silver coating that was so popular among camera manufacturers in the 90s was often called “Champagne”.   I’ve always wondered why, compared to “champagne”, so few black G2s (or other Contax T-series compact cameras) were produced.

 

湯島天神で、コンタックスG2とプラナー40mm F2のセットを首から下げた若い男性に出くわしました。G2と共に彼はデジタル一眼レフカメラも持っていました。デジタルとフィルムを同時に楽しんでいる人を最近よく見かけます。そういう楽しみ方はいいですよね。このG2が発売されていた1990年代ですが、その時にカメラメーカーの間で大流行したゴールドがかったシルバーのコーティングは、しばしば「シャンパン」と呼ばれていたそうです。 「シャンパン」色に比べて、なぜ黒いG2（あるいは他のコンタックスTシリーズ）はあまり生産されなかったのか、いつも不思議に思っています。

Fujifilm GA645Zi

Mamiya 7 + N65mm F4 L

 

Double-fisting Medium Format cameras in Shinjuku.  The one on top is a Fujifilm GA645Zi, and the bottom is a Mamiya 7 with a 65mm f4 lens.  Nowadays both models are highly sought after- with used prices to match the demand.  I still can’t believe I bought this exact same Mamiya setup in Ginza in for 80,000 yen… in 2008.  The late 2000s were the golden age of film camera prices…. for buyers, anyway! 

 

新宿で中判カメラの二刀流を発見。上は富士フイルムGA645Zi、下はマミヤ7に65mm F4レンズをつけています。今ではどちらのカメラも非常に人気があり、中古価格もその需要に見合ったものになっています。高くなったね！これとまったく同じマミヤのセットアップを私が2008年に銀座で80,000円で買ったことが今でも信じられません。2000年代後半はフィルムカメラの黄金時代だった！

Leica M4 + Elmarit M28mm F2.8

 

Also in Shinjuku last weekend- I had a random encounter with a black chrome Leica M4 and 28mm f2.8 Elmarit lens.  The photographer told me this was his “Shoji Ueda” camera, noting that he recreated the same camera setup that the late, great Ueda sensei had used.  

I mentioned at the start of this column how I like how cameras can reflect the personalities of their owners, right?  I believe what’s expressed here in this M4 is the owner’s admiration for the history of the medium in general and Shoji Ueda’s contributions in particular. Rather than attempting to equate himself with a legendary photographer I think he’s paying homage in a delightful, respectful way.

 


またもや新宿で、ブラッククロームのライカM4とエルマリートM28mm F2.8に偶然出会いました。このカメラマンは、「これが植田正治カメラだ」と教えてくれました。植田先生が使っていたのと同じカメラの設定を再現したのだそうです。 このM4で表現されているのは、一般的な写真の歴史と、特に植田正治の貢献に対するオーナーの賞賛だと思います。伝説的な写真家と自分を同一視しようとするのではなく、愉快で尊敬に満ちた方法で敬意を表していますね。

Nikon F + Nikkor-O Auto 35mm F2

 

Still in Shinjuku- I ran into this gentleman near Isetan with a well-used Nikon F setup around his neck out enjoying a beautiful early-June afternoon among the Sunday crowds. The lens is a classic 35mm f2 Nikkor-O.  He told me that he doesn’t just use old Nikons, he repairs them, too! The more people fixing old cameras, the better. 

 

新宿の伊勢丹の近くで、使い込まれたニコンFを首から下げた紳士に出くわしました。レンズはクラシックなニッコールO オート35mm F2です。 このニコンFの持ち主である男性は古いニコンを使うだけでなく、修理もしているのだと教えてくれました！古いカメラを修理する人が増えるのは素晴らしいことですね。

Pentax PC35 AF-M Date 

Fujifilm GA 645W Professional

 

Here we see a Pentax PC35 AF-M Date with a Fujifilm GA645 Wide in Shinjuku. These cameras belong to my friend Tim Ryugo, who was recently visiting Japan. Tim has been with Kodak for 45 years and is currently the marketing manager of Kodak Professional.  I had the pleasure of sharing Tokyo’s unique photo culture with him, enjoying a Sunday afternoon of photo galleries and camera shops. Along the way we ran into quite a few film photographers on the streets (a lot in Shinjuku!) one thing we both found encouraging were the numbers of young people shooting film. Indeed, the average age of customers in Shinjuku’s used camera shops seems to be around 24 or 25. (And mostly foreign.)

 

 

「Tokyo Film Camera Style」はもちろん「Tokyo Camera Style」でも初登場の、PENTAX PC35 AF-M Dateです！一緒に持っている中判カメラは富士フイルムGA645 Wide。これらのカメラは、最近来日した私の友人、ティム・リュウゴのものです。ティムさんはコダック本社に45年間勤務し、現在はコダックプロフェッショナルのマーケティングマネージャーを務めています。 私は彼と東京のユニークな写真文化を共有し、日曜日の午後にフォトギャラリーやカメラ店巡りを楽しみました。道すがら、私たちは街角で多くのフィルム写真家に出会いました（新宿ではたくさん！）。実際、新宿の中古カメラ店の客の平均年齢は24歳か25歳くらいのようです。そして外国人が多い！

 

 


I actually saw more film cameras out and about this past weekend than I can fit into this column- In fact I saw many more than I was even able to get a photo of…!  I’ll leave you with one last snap- a variety of Fujifilm 645s, out on the streets, out being used and enjoyed. 

 

この週末は本当に書ききれないほど多くのフィルムカメラを見かけました。やっぱり新宿はフィルムカメラの楽園です。

 

そして最後にもう一枚。富士フイルム645三兄弟です。やっぱりいいね。この機種がこのように街角で使われ、楽しまれていることはとても嬉しいです！！
