As usual for this time of year I spent a lot of time wandering amongst the crowds (hordes?) of cherry-petal-revelers in Ueno Park. This past week was a spectacle of both nature, and humanity. There’s a lot to see, and a lot to photograph.This year seemed especially crowded. Judging by languages spoken, on weekdays (during working hours) I guessed that inbound, foreign tourists made up at least 75 – 90% of park visitors. On the weekend it evened out to about 50-50 locals/tourists. 

 

私にとってのお花見とは、歩くことです。この時期の恒例として、私は花見客でごった返す上野公園をぶらぶらと歩いてきました。今年は特に混雑していたようです。花見客が話している言語から判断すると、平日の日中はインバウンドの外国人観光客が来園者の少なくとも75～90％を占めていました。週末は、日本人と観光客が半々くらいになります。今週のコラムはお花見をしながら「おカメラ見」をしてみました！

 

 

If, aside from eating and other biological needs, there is a more popular hobby than photography in the modern world, I can’t imagine what it might be. (ok, well, smartphone screen-scrolling.)  Ueno park in all its glory seems now to be a selfie stage- this year in particular I noticed many more video setups for Social Media Content. Despite film prices and several days of cold, wintery rain, in between people taking selfies, insta-boyfriends dutifully holding iPhone towards peacocking, posing (and sometimes dancing) partners, and thousands of people with camera lenses pointed above, I spotted quite a few film photographers.

 

食事などの欲求をのぞいて、現代社会で「写真を撮ること」よりも人気のある趣味があるとしたら、それは何でしょう。上野公園はセルフィーの舞台のようで、特に今年はSNS投稿用の動画撮影が多かったような気がします。セルフィーを撮る人々、ポーズをとる人、ダンスを踊るパートナーにiPhoneを構える男性など、いろいろ見かけました。フィルムの値段が高く、冬のような冷たい雨が数日降り続いたにもかかわらず、カメラのレンズを上に向ける何千人もの人々の間に、私はたくさんのフィルムカメラマンを見つけました。

 

Here are just a few setups I encountered:

その中のいくつか紹介しましょう。

 

 
1.

Voigtlander Bessaflex TM + Pentax Super-Takumar 55mm F1.4

 

This M42 mount camera was introduced in 2003 and had a production run that ended in 2007, a year before I began Tokyo Camera Style. Amazingly, I think this is the very first appearance of one on TCS. 

 

このM42マウントのカメラは2003年に発売され、私が東京カメラスタイルを始める1年前の2007年に生産が終了しました。驚くべきことに、この一台がカメラスタイル初登場だと思います！

 

2.Canon AE-1 + FD 50mm F1.8 S.C.

In the park I met two American visitors with Canon SLRs. One had an AE-1 with a small flash and a battery cover held in place by a Band-Aid. The other had an AE-1 Program. Years ago these Canons were ubiquitous in used camera shops and photography course classrooms. Recently their prices have increased, I think.


キヤノンの一眼レフを持ったふたりのアメリカ人観光客に出会いました。ひとりはAE-1に小さなストロボをつけ、なんとバンドエイドでバッテリーカバーを固定していました！もうひとりはAE-1プログラムを持っていました。数年前、これらのキヤノンは中古カメラ店や写真教室などで見かけることが多かったのですが、最近は値段が上がっているそうです。

Fujfilm Instax Mini 40


This one of dozens of Instax cameras I saw in the crowds- They’re particularly popular with international tourists. Since Instax film is so hard to get in Tokyo now I always wonder if they bring film to Japan, or expect to buy more once they get here…?

 

人ごみの中で見かけた何十台ものInstax「チェキ」のうちの1台です。今、Instaxのフィルムは東京では大変手に入りにくいので、いつもInstaxユーザーの海外の人を見ると思うのですが、彼らはそれぞれフィルムを日本に持ってきているのでしょうか？

Fujifilm Utsurundesu


After Instax Minis, 35mm disposable cameras were the film camera of choice for a LOT of young women and couples. Since smartphones and the like can take photos in low-light conditions you don’t see many camera flashes in public anymore. But now, if you do, it’s often from one of these. 


Instax Mini以降、35mm使い捨てカメラは多くの若い女性やカップルが選ぶフィルムカメラでした。スマートフォンが暗い場所でも写真を撮れるようになったため、人前でカメラのフラッシュを見かけることは少なくなりました。しかし今、もしストロボがピカっと光る瞬間を見かけるとしたら、それは多くの場合「写ルンです」でしょう！

Nikomat FTN+ Nikkor H-Auto 50mm F2


Another solid SLR, seen this time in the hands of a young photographer from China. The square-shaped lens hood is a nice touch!


中国出身の若い写真家の手にある一眼レフです。四角いレンズフードがいい感じ！

 

It wouldn’t be a day out in Tokyo without seeing some Leicas. I lost count of how many Leica Qs I saw in Ueno Park last week- and saw at least a dozen digital M setups each day.  Here are a few film ones:

 

さて、東京でライカを見ない日はありません。上野公園で何台のライカQを見たかは数え切れませんが、毎日少なくとも十台以上、デジタルM型のセットアップを見かけました。 フィルムのM型もいくつか紹介します。

 

7.

Leica M-A + Elmarit-M 28mm F2.8 ASPH lens + Kameracraft grip

 

The hands of an American visitor here hold a black chrome M-A with what I believe to be the best 28mm lens ever made: the Elmarit-M 28mm f2.8 ASPH. This camera is paired with the latest model grip from Kameracraft, a brilliantly balanced M grip produced by an independent craftsman in France. Highly recommended! 

 

アメリカ人観光客の手にはブラッククロームのライカM-Aが握られ、レンズは私が史上最高の28mmと信じるエルマリート-M 28mm F2.8 ASPH！そしてこのカメラには、フランスの独立系職人によって製作された見事なバランスのMグリップ「カメラクラフト」の最新モデルが装着されています。おすすめです！

Leica MP Black Paint + COLOR-SKOPAR Vintage Line 21mm F3.5 Aspherical Type II VM + KEKS KM02 meter


A few moments later I met another American who had a Black Paint MP with a Voigtlander 21mm lens and an external meter. The meter is produced by the Hong Kong based camera accessory company KEKS. Not only that, but he had a hat to match!


しばらくして、私はブラックペイントのライカMPにフォクトレンダーの21mmレンズと外部メーターを装着したもうひとりのアメリカ人に出会いました。このメーターは香港のカメラアクセサリー会社KEKSの製品です。また、それだけでなく、彼はお揃いの帽子をかぶっていました！

 

 

In a previous column I suggested that a black paint MP is the “Last Boss” of film M Leicas. Sure enough, I soon saw another.

 

以前のコラムで、黒塗りのライカMPはフィルムMライカの「ラスボス」だと宣言しました。案の定、すぐにもう一台発見しましたよ。

Leica MP+ Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH

 

On a path by the Shinobazu pond swan boat dock I found another Black Paint MP, seen here in the hands of another visitor from America. You can tell that this is an earlier production MP from the mid 2000s by its “shark leather” type leatherette. 

 

不忍池のスワンボート乗り場の脇の小道で、もう一台のブラックペイントMPを見つけました。「シャークレザー」と呼ばれる革張りから、2000年代半ばに製造された初期のMPだとわかります。

 

While I was chatting with this photographer, out of the corner of my eye I spotted another rangefinder camera…

 

このカメラマンと話をしている間、目の端にもう一台のレンジファインダーカメラを見つけました。

 

 
10.

Kiev 4+ Jupiter-8 50mm F2


You don’t see a lot of Soviet-made cameras out on Tokyo streets or in this case, in Tokyo parks! I’m not familiar with them- and asked the owner of this one what model it was. He replied that he wasn’t sure- maybe a Kiev 4? I nodded in agreement and then later looked online. The light meter on the top deck means it is indeed a model 4. The lens is a well-used Jupiter-8 50mm. A while back a friend of mine with a lot of Soviet-made camera experience said that a lens or body with signs of use was a good thing, since it meant that it worked well, compared to cleaner gear that didn’t get used since it wasn’t as well made. 

 

東京の街角や公園でソ連製のカメラを見かけることはあまりありません。私はソ連製カメラに詳しくないので、このカメラの持ち主に機種を尋ねてみました。この「キエフ4」のトップデッキのライトメーターは、確かにモデル4であることを意味しています。レンズはよく使われたJupiter-8の50mm。少し前に、ソ連製カメラの経験が豊富な友人が、使用感のあるレンズやボディは良いものだと言っていました。なぜかといえば、品質が良いから。つまり写りの良くないカメラやレンズは新品同様の姿で残っているそうです。

Leica IIIf + Elmar 50mm F3.5 


Amongst the food stalls leading to Bentendo temple on the pond I saw a young man from China with this Leica IIIf to his eye. The “Leica” red dot stood out! Some of you know that this camera was produced in the 1950s – and a few might know that the red dot Leica logo was introduced in 1986 and can be found on current models today. Some Leica shooters cover these red dots with black tape- and here we see that others add them to cameras that never had them in the first place! Altering a camera to fit the desires of its owner is indeed “Camera Style”.

 

池のほとりの弁天堂に続く屋台の中で、私はこのライカIIIfを持った若い男を見つけました。「Leica」の赤い丸印が目立っていましたよ！このカメラが1950年代に製造されたこと、また1986年にライカの赤丸のロゴが導入され、現在のモデルにも採用されていることはご存知だという方もいるでしょう。ライカを使う人の中には、この赤丸を黒いテープで隠す人もいるのですが、元々赤いロゴがなかったカメラに赤いロゴを追加する人もいるんです！所有者の好みに合わせてカメラを改造するのが「カメラスタイル」なんです。

 

To some, sakura blossoms call for big negatives- and a 6x6 TLR is a fine option for the season.

 

桜の花を撮影するには大きなネガフィルムが必要だという人もいるでしょうが、この季節には6×6の二眼レフが最適なように感じます。

 

12.

Ricohflex Model VII

 

This is a simple, practical- and affordable- TLR from 1954. This one is in great condition. Looks pretty good for a 71 year old camera!

 

1954年製のシンプルで実用的、そして手頃な価格の二眼レフです。そしてこの一台は素晴らしいコンディション。71歳のカメラとしてはかなり良いですね！

 

Speaking of Japanese-made TLRs-

日本製の二眼レフが続きますよ。

 


13.

Yashicaflex


A Yashicaflex- like the previous Ricoflex, this is another budget-friendly, 70-year-old TLR.

If you look closely, you can see the original leatherette on the focusing hood has been replaced with a different material.  Personally, I don’t know much about these cameras- but looking them up online will give you access to highly detailed, thoroughly researched websites by enthusiastic camera collectors. 

 

ヤシカフレックス！さっきのリコーフレックスと同じく、これも70年前の手頃な二眼レフです。よく見ると、レンズプレートのレザーレットは別の素材にカスタマイズされています。 個人的にこれらのカメラについて詳しくないのですが、ネットで調べてみると、熱心なカメラコレクターの非常に詳細で徹底的に研究されたウェブサイトを見ることができます。カメラの世界ってほんとうに奥深いですね。

 

The cameras above are but just a few I saw over the past week. Obviously digital cameras of all kinds greatly outnumbered film cameras- and smartphones were even more popular for picture-taking than actual cameras.

 

Speaking of digital cameras, I noticed that Fujifilm X100s seemed more common among foreign tourists than Japanese photographers. On the other hand, I saw more Japanese across different age groups using Ricoh GR cameras.  I think I saw comparatively more Japanese with Nikons, too. (The retro-styled Nikon Z fc in particular.)


ここで紹介したカメラは、私がこの1週間で見たほんの一部です。あらゆる種類のデジタルカメラがフィルムカメラを大きく上回っているのは明らかで、スマートフォンは実際のカメラよりも写真撮影に用いられていました。 

 

デジタルカメラでは富士フイルムX100は日本人より外国人観光客が手にしているのを多く見ました。一方、リコーGRを使っている日本人は年代を問わずたくさんいました。 ニコンも比較的多く見かけた気がします（特にレトロスタイルのNikon Z fcなど）。

 

But it wasn’t just cameras that caught my eye!

しかし、私の目に留まったのはカメラだけではありませんよ！

 

How about “Tokyo Anime Doll Style”?

まずは「東京人形スタイル」です。

 

 

A lot of people come to Ueno Park with their dogs- but one visitor brought a monkey. 

上野公園には犬を連れた人が多いですが、ある方は猿を連れていました。

 


This is George, a regular visitor to Ueno Park. He’s pretty curious- here he is trying to climb up my leg. George doesn’t have a camera, but now that I think of it, handing him one of those childproof, toy digital cameras you can get at Yodobashi Camera might be interesting. A monkey’s lens-view of the park - Tokyo Monkey Style. 

 

上野公園の常連客のジョージです。ジョージは好奇心旺盛で、私の足をよじ登ろうとしています。ジョージはカメラを持っていませんが、試しにヨドバシカメラなどで売っているトイデジを渡してみるのも面白いかもしれませんね。
