Tokyo is blessed with several photobook events each year, and the latest one, the V Photobook fair, was held at Creative Space Akademeia 21 Harajuku on June 7 & 8, 2025.  Set along “cat street” in Harajuku/Omotesando, more than twenty publishers, galleries, and photographers had tables with their publications. I stopped by for a little bit on the second afternoon- it was great to see a lot of familiar faces and make some new friends. Photography’s best in person! And several of those people had film cameras on them.  Here’s a few that were there that day: 

 

 

東京では毎年いくつかの写真集イベントが開催されますが、最新のイベント「Vフォトブックフェア」は2025年6月7日と8日に原宿の「Creative Space Akademeia 21で」行われました。原宿・表参道の「キャットストリート」沿いに位置するこの会場には、20を超える出版社、ギャラリー、写真家たちが自らの出版物を展示していました。

 

 

私は2日目の午後に少し立ち寄ったのですが、懐かしい顔ぶれに会えたり、新しい友達ができたりしてとても楽しかったです。やはり写真は対面が一番！そして、その場にいた何人かはフィルムカメラを持っていました。以下はその日にいた人たちの一部です。

 

1.

Nikon F3HP + AF Nikkor 50mm F1.8 D

 

It’s always, always, always nice to see a Nikon F3. Nikon’s most beautifully designed camera, in my opinion. This one has an Auto Focus lens- which, thanks to Nikon’s generous focus (!) on backwards compatibility, works just fine in manual focus mode. 

 

ニコンF3を見るのは、いつだって本当にうれしいものです。私の意見では、ニコンで最も美しくデザインされたカメラです。この個体にはオートフォーカスレンズが装着されていますが、ニコンの寛大な後方互換性のおかげで、マニュアルフォーカスモードでも問題なく使えます。

 

2.

Canon Autoboy Mini II

 

Over the hour or so I was at the fair on Sunday afternoon I spotted several compact cameras - this is the underrated Canon Autoboy Mini II, seen in the hand of a young woman working there. I’ve owned one of these cameras in the past- I never understood why the on/off switch was located ON the lens barrel! When you turn it on there’s a slight pause to get your finger out of the way, and then the lens extends to its shooting position. 

Rather than a full-range zoom, this camera offers photographers the choice between 38mm & 70mm focal lengths.

 

日曜の午後にフェアにいた1時間ほどのあいだに、いくつかのコンパクトカメラを見かけました。こちらはあまり注目されていないキヤノン・オートボーイMini IIで、会場で働いていた若い女性の手にありました。

私も過去にこのカメラを所有していたことがありますが、電源スイッチがレンズ鏡筒の上にある理由は最後まで理解できませんでした！電源を入れるとき、指をどかすまで少し間があり、その後でレンズが撮影位置までせり出します。ズームレンズではなく、このカメラは38mmと70mmの2つの焦点距離を選べる仕様になっています。

This Konica Hexar belongs to Gallery Kaido member Haruna Sato. In her hand is a copy of her latest self-published edition in her brilliant, ongoing diaristic series Ichi No Hi. Photographs in this series are taken on the first of each month.  I enjoy her dedication to film photography- and her clever ideas, like offering individual frames from her contact sheets for sale. What a great idea!

 

このコニカ・ヘキサーは、ギャラリー街道のメンバーである佐藤春菜さんのものです。彼女の手にあるのは、自身の素晴らしい連作日記的シリーズ『いちの日』の最新セルフパブリッシング版。このシリーズの写真は、毎月1日に撮影されたものです。彼女のフィルム写真への献身、そしてコンタクトシートのコマを一枚ずつ販売するといったアイデアにはいつも感心させられます。本当に素晴らしいアイデアですね！

I noticed this clean M6 setup around the neck of a young man at the fair, and, since M6s have a magnetic property for me, I went over to say hi. He told me that he is an eighteen-year-old photo student. And that he had another M6 in his bag…

 

フェアで若い男性の首から下がっていた、きれいなライカM6のセットが目に留まりました。M6にはなぜか引き寄せられる性質があるので、思わず挨拶しに行きました。彼は18歳の写真の学生だと話してくれました。そして、なんとバッグの中にはもう1台M6が入っているとも…！

写真の学校を始めるには、なんとも素晴らしいカメラのペアですね！

 

 

Since I had my M6 that day, I took this “M18” picture ( 6 x 3 = 18 )

私もM6を持っていたので、M6が3台集結した「M18」の写真を撮りました！

Pentax Espio Mini :75th anniversary edition

 

The competition among camera makers in the late 1990s to produce the smallest, lightest cameras resulted in some very fine products. This svelte Espio Mini is one of them. (Bonus points for the 75th anniversary hologram sticker.)

 

1990年代後半、カメラメーカー各社が最小・最軽量のカメラを作ろうと競い合った結果、非常に優れた製品がいくつも生まれました。このオシャレでスリムなエスピオ・ミニもそのひとつです。

Ricoh GR21

A tiny camera with a lens wide enough to take it all in- there’s not much more to say! A truly legendary camera, and one that I think would find a welcome audience today if Ricoh was able to re-release it…  (And no, I don’t mean a digital version! This lens and film makes for real magic.)

 


すべてを写し込めるほど広角のレンズを備えた小さなカメラ──もう多くを語る必要はありません！これは本当に伝説的なカメラで、もしリコーが再発売できたなら、きっと今でも歓迎される存在になると思います。念のため言っておきますが、デジタル版のことではありません！ このレンズとフィルムの組み合わせこそが、本物の魔法を生むのです。

Photo & Culture TokyoのPCTチームも、Vフォトブックフェアに出展していました。このウェブサイトの運営に加え、写真集の出版社としても活動しており、雑誌『写真』も制作しています。彼らの後ろには、北島敬三さんの新版『NEW YORK』のポスターが掲げられていました（https://photoandculture-tokyo.com/contents.php?i=4431）。

Konica Kanpai

 

This is one of the most unique, most 1990s compact cameras ever made.  

Not only does it have a splatter paint, pseudo-granite finish, it’s got a noise-activated shutter. Why’s that? The Konica “Kanpai” (“cheers” in English) was sold as a party camera- ideally, you’d place it somewhere in a room (or izakaya) with a lot of people and, upon a loud enough outburst of noise at the party, it would respond by taking a photo. 

The tripod it came with even had a pair of tiny plastic saddle shoes at the end of its legs. This one was actually for sale at the PCT table- and I truly regret not buying it! Maybe it’ll be there next year…

 

これは最高に1990年代らしく、最高なユニークなコンパクトカメラかもしれません。スプラッターペイント風の擬似御影石仕上げに加え、なんと音に反応してシャッターが切れる仕組みになっています。なぜそんな機能が？  実はこのコニカ「カンパイ」は、その名の通り“乾杯”カメラとして販売されていたのです。理想的な使い方は、たとえば人が集まる部屋や居酒屋などにこのカメラを設置し、パーティーで盛り上がって大きな音がすると、自動的に写真を撮ってくれるという仕組み！ 付属の三脚の脚の先には、小さなプラスチック製のサドルシューズまで付いていました。

 

この1台はPCTのテーブルで実際に販売されていたのですが…。本当に買わなかったことを後悔しています！次回もまた再会できるといいな…。
