A photo lab with same-day film processing for 35mm, 120, even 110 formats- at 500 yen* per roll? Quality scans, fantastic prints—this might sound like a local photo shop found anywhere in the world back in 2004. 

Thankfully though, such a place still exists in Tokyo in 2024. 

 

今回のTokyo Film Camera Styleは特別版と称して「カラーフィルム現像」の話です。

35mm、120、110フォーマットのフィルムが1本500円で即日処理できるフォトラボがあることをご存知でしょうか？高品質のスキャン、綺麗なプリントも可能なお店です。20年前の2004年だったら世界中どこにでもあった町のDPEですが、2024年現在、しかもありがたいことに東京の下町にそんな店があるのです。

 

 

That’s right- I want to tell you about my favorite little local Tokyo photo lab, Yellow Jacket.  

 

Located near Sendagi Station in Yanaka, this shop has become a favorite for many of Tokyo’s film photographers. I’ve actually been taking my film to Yellow Jacket for the past few years- and, wanting to do this write-up on it, recently stopped by to chat with the owner, Kazuo Nakaya.

 

今回は私のお気に入りの小さなフォトラボ「イエロージャケット」を紹介しようと思います。

東京の多くのフィルム写真好きに愛されているこのお店は、谷中の千駄木駅近くにあります。実は私もここ数年、イエロージャケットにフィルム現像を出しに行っています。今回この記事を書くにあたって、オーナーの仲谷和夫さんに話を聞いてきました。

 

 

Nakaya-san told me that “Yellow Jacket” was once a franchise consisting of about 40 or so labs in Japan. (He opened his at this spot in 1998.) In Tokyo there remain three Yellow Jackets: this Sendagi shop, one in Monzennakacho, and one in Ojima. (Aichi-people rejoice: there is still a shop outside Nagoya station.) 

 

Inside and out, Yellow Jacket Sendagi enjoys a cozy, naturally practical, and utterly unpretentious shitamachi sort of feeling that matches the neighborhood. Racks of old books and dozens and dozens of umbrellas sit outside its entrance. There are so many umbrellas that first-time visitors (or the average passers-by) might wonder what kind of place it actually is. 

 

千駄木店で働く仲谷さんによると「イエロージャケット」はかつて日本に40店舗ほどのフランチャイズだったそうです。東京には、この千駄木店、門前仲町店、大島店の3店舗が残っています。愛知県には名古屋駅前に店舗があるそうです。

 

イエロージャケット千駄木店は、店内も外も居心地がよく、実用的で、下町の雰囲気を醸し出しています。入口の外には、古本と何十本もの傘が並べられています。あまりに傘が多いので、初めて訪れる人（あるいは普通の通行人）は、いったいどんな店なのだろうと思うかもしれませんね。

 

 

Stepping inside, customers find themselves immediately at the shop counter. There’s not a lot of room to walk around here. The customer service area is surrounded by boxes (and more umbrellas) and two digital printer setups. A lab tech- often Nakaya-san- is there to take orders. 

In addition to film processing, Yellow Jacket handles nearly anything you’d want to do with digital images. (See their site for details.)

Visitors will probably notice pictures of cats and other cat-related items/figurines in the shop. (Nakaya-san has three cats). 

 

店内に一歩足を踏み入れるとすぐにカウンターがあります。接客エリアは箱に囲まれ（さらに傘もある）、デジタルプリンターが2台設置されています。ラボの技術者（千駄木店の場合は仲谷さん）がいて、注文を受けています。イエロージャケットはフィルム処理だけでなく、デジタル画像のことならほとんど何でも扱っています。詳しくはホームページを参照してくださいね。

 

The heart of any photo lab is its film processor. Nakaya san showed me his, in the center of the shop sits a Noritsu V30. He told me this is the same machine he’s had since day one, adding that this model is particularly useful in that it can handle both 135 and 120 film formats.  His printer/scanner hardware is also Noritsu-made.  Once a customer’s film is processed, he runs it through a Noritsu LP-2500 G3 unit.  

 

もちろんフォトラボの心臓部はフィルムプロセッサー。仲谷さんが見せてくれたのは、店の中央に置かれた「Noritsu（ノーリツ）V30」。この機種は35mmと120、両方のフィルムフォーマットに対応できるのが特に便利だそうです。プリンターとスキャナーのハードウェアもノーリツ製です。顧客のフィルムが処理されると、それをNoritsu LP-2500G3に通します。

 

 

Alright, so I’ve actually never had film scanned anywhere, ever. This is why I can’t share any personal experiences or scan-assessments. However, the people I’ve pointed to Yellow Jacket have told me they do good, high quality work. Speaking of scans, customers can get their scan data (4 Base / 16 Base / 64 Base) returned to them on CD or via an online data transfer service.

 

実は、私はフィルムを自分でスキャンするため、お店でスキャンを頼んだことはありません…。そのため個人的なスキャンの満足度をお伝えすることができないのですが、イエロージャケットのスキャンサービスを利用する知人たちは、質の高さを評価していました。スキャンデータ（4ベース／16ベース／64ベース）はCDに焼き込んでもらうか、オンラインデータ転送サービスで受け取ることができます。

 

While I don’t know much about scans, I DO know prints.  Since moving to Japan in 2004 I have kept a 35mm color film diary. That’s twenty-years non-stop of color snapshots. Photographically conservative and unashamedly nostalgic, my color film approach is unchanged from consumer photography’s one-hour past: I drop off my film, wait a bit, and then come back to pick up not negs or scans but actual pictures.  That’s right- I get a print for each and every frame. I love the fact that Yellow Jacket provides a white-border service- and for free. I’ll never get tired of this ritual- or that feeling of taking home a fresh envelop of prints and putting them in my albums.

 

スキャンよりプリントこそが私の得意分野です。2004年に来日して以来、私は35mmカラーフィルム日記をつけています。つまり20年間ノンストップでカラースナップショットを撮り続けたことになります。写真的に保守的で、恥ずかしげもなくノスタルジックな私のアプローチは、カラーフィルムをラボに預けて、スキャンではなくプリントされた実際の写真を受け取りにいくというもの。私はこの「儀式」に飽きることはないし、新鮮なプリントを封筒に入れて持ち帰り、アルバムに入れるあの感覚にも飽きることはありません。イエロージャケットのサービスのひとつ、写真に白いフチをつけてくれることも気に入っています。

 

 

Yellow Jacket’s beautiful prints are lazer prints done with silver-bromide paper. (Nakaya-san told me that there are no more labs with actual analog printers, anywhere.) 

On the scanner unit’s monitor, each frame of film is inspected and adjusted by the lab’s technicians. He says that Noritsu scanners grant a tech more options than other machines, and so he was able to custom-set his machine to print as close to analog/optical prints as possible. They look fantastic- and are free of over-sharpness and over-saturation.  (As a further personal testament of their print quality, I’ve used 11x14 Yellow Jacket enlargements for three color exhibitions at Totem Pole Photo Gallery. )

 

イエロージャケットの美しいプリントは、銀塩印画紙を使ったレーザープリントだそうです。仲谷さんによると、実際のアナログプリンターを持つラボはもうどこにもないそうです。スキャナーのモニターでは、フィルムや各フレームが検査され、ラボの技術者によって調整されます。仲谷さんによると、ノーリツのスキャナーは他の機械よりも多くのオプションがあるため、アナログの光学プリントにできるだけ近いプリントをするように機械をカスタム設定することができるのだそうです。ありがたいですね。過度なシャープネスや彩度もありません。素晴らしい仕上がりです。私はトーテムポールフォトギャラリーで過去に開催した3度のカラー写真展で、イエロージャケットで引き伸ばした大四切サイズ写真を展示したこともあります。

 

Obviously, running a photo lab in 2024 is not without its challenges! The price of materials continues to rise- and for most people, a smartphone is (sadly) good enough.   

 

And yet, Yellow Jacket has maintained a customer base. Film remains a popular choice. From my many visits, they seem to be a favorite of young people who don’t seem old enough to remember the 1-hour heyday.  They’re also popular with foreign visitors. I get several messages each week from people asking where to get their film done in Tokyo- this is where I point them. 

 

もちろん、2024年にフォトラボを経営することは容易ではありません。材料の価格は上昇し続け、ほとんどの人はスマートフォンで十分、となってしまった時代です。

 

それでもイエロージャケットは顧客数を維持しています。フィルムは依然として人気があるのです。これまで何度も足を運んできましたが、今は全盛期を知らないような若者たちに人気があるようです。また外国人観光客にも人気です。 私は毎週「東京でフィルム現像を出すならどの店がいいか」というメッセージを何通ももらっているのです。

 

 

Other enticements that Yellow Jacket Sendagi offers are:  

- The “Brownie Pass” a prepaid card for enjoyers of 120 format (called “Browine Film” in Japan):  Get six rolls of 120 processed for 2500 yen! 

- A mail service: You can send your film to Yellow Jacket from anywhere in Japan.

And if that’s not enough, they even have:

- A scooter delivery service: Nakaya-san has a yellow scooter that he uses for Free film pickup / delivery for customers within the local area (check website for the map). Your move, rest of the international film community.

(Tri-X/HP-5 fans take note: While Yellow Jacket offers same-day color service, black and white film has to be sent out and has a turnaround time of at least a week.)

 

またそれだけでは物足りない方には、以下のサービスもあります。

※Tri-X/HP-5ファンは要注意：イエロージャケットではカラーフィルムは即日発送ですが、モノクロフィルムは発送が必要で、納期は少なくとも1週間かかります。

 

 

While local 1-hour film labs have disappeared from a lot of cities around the world, Tokyo remains blessed by the several places that professionally and quickly process film.  

Yellow Jacket, with its quality, great service, low prices- not to mention racks of umbrellas and cat-related décor- is a place I hope that you’ll try out someday soon. 

 

私の地元にあった1 Hour Photoというフィルムラボは世界中の多くの都市から姿を消してしまいましたが、東京にはプロフェッショナルに素早くフィルムを処理してくれる場所がいくつもあり、恵まれていると感じます。イエロージャケットは、その品質、素晴らしいサービス、低価格はもちろんのこと、傘の棚や猫にちなんだ装飾品もあり、いつか皆さんにも試していただきたい場所です。
