皆さんハッピーニューイヤー！
2023年最初のコラムは、“カラフル”な過去を振り返りながら、これからの1年について考えていきたいと思います。

 

今年はTokyo Camera Style（TCS）の15周年になります。これまでのことを考えながら、TCSのアーカイブをゆっくり見ようと思っていたところです。

TCSはただカメラの話というだけではなくて、東京の写真世界をレポートするものだと思っています。やっぱり、TCSを始めた2008年から、いろいろなことがあり、いろいろ値上がりして、多くのものが無くなって、フィルムの価格で泣きたくて…。

 

For my first column of the 2023 I'd like to look back, and then look forward.
Tokyo Camera Style will turn fifteen years old this year.  Pondering this I decide to scroll through the archives. Since I started it in 2008, a lot has changed in the photo culture of Tokyo, particularly in prices and availability of film.

二度とはこの値段にならないかもしれませんが、そうなったらいいね。

I don't think we'll see prices like that again- but we can dream, I guess.

 

フィルムも安かったですが、カメラの価格もなかなか今では考えられない「数字」があったのです。

2013年、マップカメラで売られていたライカM6の価格は「1」からスタートしました。


It wasn't just film that was cheaper- these were Map Camera's Leica M6 prices in 2013:

 

値段が安いということはもちろんですが、アーカイブを見ながら引っかかったことがあります。

当たり前かも知れませんが、ほとんどのカメラが黒かシルバー。しかし、もっとカラフルなアプローチをするカメラメーカーもちらほら見受けられます。なので、今日はcolorカメラを気軽に紹介したいと思います。

まずは赤から。


Anyway, besides the low prices, something else that caught my eye in the archive-dive was the fact that so many cameras are either black or silver.  However, here and there you can see that there have been camera-makers who've taken a more colorful approach. Therefore I thought it might be fun to take a look at some of the more vivid cameras I've seen over the years.



理由はよくわかりませんが、赤いカメラが女性に人気がありました。

For some reason, red cameras seem to be most often in the hands of young women.

「ナショナル」のカメラはポップでかわいい。

And this National camera .

 

 

RICOH Mycrystal 35mm F4.5（BANDAI）

 

マルチカラーカメラもありました。このマイクリスタルはすごくかっこいいね。

Some makers went multi-colored, like with this Bandai My Crystal:

 

Nikon COOLPIX W100

 

ニコンのコンパクトデジタルカメラにはカラーバリエーションがあります。このコンデジは子供の手に握られています。

Nikon's digital offerings have almost always had some interesting color variations- this camera was aimed at kids. Seen here in the hands of one:

15年間、たまに白いカメラとも出会いました。 

Over the years I've encountered a few white cameras, too.

 

Lomo'Instant Camera (White Edition)

 

ロモのインスタントカメラです。いいね。

This is a Lomography LOMO'INSTANT.

 

Fujifilm Natura Classica White

 

基本的に富士フイルムNATURA Classicaのボディカラーは黒でしたが、真っ白なモデルもありました。
本製品の生産終了後、ヨドバシカメラのフィルム館のレジの隣に、かなり値引きされた白いClassicaがたくさんありました。買えばよかったな〜。

 

The Fujifilm Natura Classica was normally grey and black but there was a white variation, too. Do I regret not getting one on clearance at Yodobashi Camera when they had a stack of them discounted by the register? YES.

 

 

 

Ricoh Auto Half

 

1960年代、リコーのオートハーフはバリエーション豊かな、ポップなデザインでした。

In the 1960s, Ricoh's Auto Half cameras came in all sorts of pop designs.

 

 

Konica Gembakantoku & Ricoh GR10

 

コニカのカメラデザイナーたちには遊び心があったのだと思います。このオレンジの「現場監督」が面白い、きっと工事現場にピッタリでした。

 

Konica's designers too, seemed to have fun. Their Konica Gembakantoku series came in a few different colors, I think. That industrial orange probably fit in with construction sites.

 

 

Polaroid 600 Yellow&Pink

 

ポラロイド600シリーズも本を書けるほどバリエーションがありました。
The variations that Polaroid 600s came in could fill a book.

もちろんピンクや白、赤といったカラフルなカメラを使うことによって、シルバーや黒のカメラより写真が上達するということではないのですが、ユーザーが個人的に好きなカメラ、面白さや愛着を感じられるカメラを持つべきなんだと思います。

そういえば、私が通っていた大学で、写真学科の教授が授業の初日に言ったことを思い出します。

 

「カメラはこれからどこにでも持っていくのだから、

　自分が見ていて楽しいもの、人に見られてもいいものを選びなさい」


この言葉が、その後のTokyo Camera Styleの原型を作ったのだと思っています。


Obviously there's no real way that a pink or white or red camera will improve your photography over a silver or black one- but that's not the point. 
The point- if there is one- reminds me of something my university photo professor told us on the first day of class: "When choosing a camera make sure it's something you like to look at and don't mind being seen with, since you're going to be carrying it everywhere from now."   
Fine advice- and something which I think deep-down planted the seed for Tokyo Camera Style years later...

 

そして、2023年。

So, looking ahead. 2023. 

いやな不安（円安、インフラ、フィルム値上げなど）は置いておいて、楽しみにしていることを話しましょう。


Let's set problems and worries aside for a moment- things like film availability, weak yen, inflation, etc.
There's plenty to look forward to photographically this year-
 Here's a few things I'm excited about.

 

1月

雑誌『写真』3号発売！

六本木のZen Foto Galleryで、1月13日から2月11日まで私の写真展「銀園」を開催します。お時間がありましたらぜひ見に来てください。

The release of Shashin Magazine vol.3!

I'm having a solo exhibition of my Tokyo Silver Paradise series at Zen Foto from 1/13-2/11.

2月

山崎弘義写真展「路上の匂い」ギャラリーヨクト

February: Hiroyoshi Yamazaki's "Smell on the Street" at Gallery Yocto (2/2-2/19)

 

3月

写真展「深瀬昌久 1961-1991」東京写真美術館。すごく楽しみです。

March: Masahisa Fukase retrospective at TOP Museum in Ebisu (3/3 - 6/4)

 

その他には、みなさんと同じようにペンタックスから新しいフィルムカメラの発表があることを期待しています。希望や夢をいうと、フィルムが入手しやすくなり、価格も下がるような流れがあればいいなと思います。 個人的には、写真散歩、カメラスタイルとの出会い、暗室チャンスが増えることを期待しています。

また、今年ももっと多くの写真集や写真展をこのコラムで紹介できることを楽しみにしています。

As for the rest of the year, like everyone else I'm looking forward to hearing more from Pentax concerning their announcement for a possible new film camera. Other hopes and dreams?  A trend where film availability increases with prices declining would be nice.  I'm not economist but it's nice to wish for. Personally, I'm looking forward to more photo walks, more camera style encounters, and more time in the darkroom.
