Starting off with what I’ve called the “final boss” of user Leicas- a mint black paint Leica MP:

 

今回も最近出会ったカメラたちをお届けします。まずは、僕が「ユーザー向けライカのラスボス」と呼んでいる、極上コンディションのブラックペイント Leica MP から。

 

1.

Leica MP＋Voigtländer ULTRON Vintage Line 35mm F2 Aspherical

 

At Hasedera in Kamakura I stepped backwards to take a photo- and accidentally, slightly bumped into a man behind me. I apologized and he -an American- turned around and said it was not a problem. My reply was “Leica MP!”, as I noticed this beautiful camera around his neck. I had my chrome MP with me and so, as Leica users in particular- and Americans in general tend to do, we began to chat. He’s a professional sports photographer- one who photographs martial arts, in particular. This MP is one of his personal cameras. His Instagram bio notes that he’s got a black belt in ju-jitsu(!)- the camera makes a nice match.


鎌倉の長谷寺で写真を撮ろうと後ろに下がったとき、うっかり後ろの男性に少しぶつかってしまいました。謝ると、アメリカ人の彼は気にしなくていいよと言ってくれて、その瞬間、彼の首から下がっていた美しい Leica MPに目に入り「ライカMPですね！」と思わず声が出ました。僕もその時ちょうどクロームのMPを持っていたので、ライカ使い――そしてアメリカ人らしく――すぐに会話がスタート。

 

彼はプロのスポーツ写真家で、特に武道を撮っているとのこと。このMPは彼の私物カメラの一台で、Instagramには柔術の黒帯と書いてありました…！。カメラと持ち主の雰囲気がとてもよく合っていました。

 

Soon after, I spotted another beautiful rangefinder in Kamakura:

そのすぐ後、鎌倉でもう一台美しいレンジファインダーに遭遇しました。

 


2.

Minolta CLE＋Minolta M-Rokkor 40mm F2

 

While waiting at a crosswalk for the light to change, I noticed a man with a rangefinder in his hand. As he approached, I said hi, and camera-chat number 2 of the past twenty minutes commenced. He told me he was visiting from Korea- this CLE and lens make for a fine travel companion.


横断歩道で信号待ちをしていたとき、手にレンジファインダーを持つ男性を発見。近づいてきたので「こんにちは」と声をかけ、この20分間で2回目のカメラ談義がスタート。彼は韓国から旅行に来ているとのことでした。このミノルタCLEと40mmは、確かに旅には最高の相棒です。

 

Back in Tokyo, I spent an afternoon photo-walking with Ed & Deanna Templeton, two American photographers who are both incredible artists AND two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. For several years now they’ve always kindly made time to meet up with me on their semi-annual Japan trips. This is Ed’s camera:


東京に戻ってからは、アメリカの写真家Ed & Deanna Templeton（エド・テンプルトン、デアナ・テンプルトン）と一緒にフォトウォークしました。この夫婦とも素晴らしいアーティストで、とんでもなく親切な人たちでもあります。彼らは毎年の日本旅行の際、いつも時間を作って会ってくれるんです。こちらが Ed さんのカメラです。

Leica M6（2022）＋Summilux-M 50mm F1.4

 

Ed’s been shooting a Leica M6TTL since the late 1990s. I’ve seen that camera several times, and it certainly looks like a camera that a professional skateborder has carried with him for thirty years! Recently, Ed brought this re-release M6 into his life. The black-painted brass coverings of this new camera will no doubt come to have nicks and scratches and paint wear that all well-used (and used well!) cameras have.


エドは90年代後半からずっとライカM6TTL を使っていて、彼がそのカメラを使っているところを何度か見たことがありますが、本当に「プロスケーターが30年持ち歩いたカメラ」という味がしっかり刻まれていました。最近になってこの復刻版M6も仲間入りしたとのこと。真鍮のブラックペイントは、これから使い込まれて、いい傷や塗装の摩耗が加わっていくことでしょう。

Leica M6TTL＋Summilux-M 50mm F1.4 ASPH

 

Deanna’s M6 is likewise well used- and of course, used well. She has published several photobooks of her work. In fact, you can find several of the Templeton’s books at Super Labo in Jimbocho, or Tsutaya in Daikanyama.


デアナのライカM6も使い込まれています、もちろん「いい使われ方」をしたものです。彼女はすでに何冊も写真集を出していて、神保町のスーパーラボや代官山 蔦屋書店にもテンプルトン夫妻の本が置いてあります。

 

Both Deanna and Ed are mainly 50mm shooters, on our walk Deanna switched to a wide-angle once. Ed showed me that he carries their other lens (an older 35mm f2 Summicron, that they share) in an original plastic Leitz lens holder:


デアナもエドも基本的には50mm使いですが、この日はデアナが一度だけ広角レンズに交換していました。エドはもう一本の“共有レンズ”（オールドのズミクロン35mm F2）を、昔のプラスチック製ライツのレンズケースに入れて持ち歩いていました。

 

 

Like the couple themselves this case- and lens-sharing arrangement- is very durable- and quite cool.

このレンズケースと「レンズ共有スタイル」、そして何より二人自身が、タフですごくかっこいい。

 

While walking near Nippori station I saw this window display for a photo studio:

日暮里駅の近くを歩いていると、ある写真館のショーウィンドウにこんなものを見つけました。

 

 

In it were two charming, somewhat faded “cameras” made from cardboard. I don’t know where you put the film- but they were quite well made.


中には、ちょっと色あせた段ボール製カメラが2つ。フィルムをどこに入れるのかは分かりませんが、よくできていました。

 

Further on our walk I met a visitor from China with a massive Mamiya:
さらに歩いていると、中国から来た旅行者が巨大なマミヤを構えているのを発見しました。

 

5.

Mamiya C220＋Mamiya-Sekor 105mm F3.5

 

Twin Lens Reflex cameras are quite rare on TCS- I simply don’t see many people with them. I assume this has more to do with the fact that TLRs – especially the Mamiya C series- generally aren’t “walkaround” cameras. They’re maybe more like Destination Cameras- that is, cameras people keep in their bag until they’re where their subject is. I can say this with a slight sense of experience. Years ago, I briefly owned a Mamiya C330. After a day walking with it over my shoulder, I returned home to see that its solid metal frame had left bruises on my hipbone. This wasn’t why I sold it. It was because I had trouble composing shots in a 1:1 ratio. Hat’s off to those who can! I have much respect for dedicated 6x6 shooters.


Tokyo Camera Styleでも二眼レフはかなりレアで、正直ほとんど見かけません。このマミヤCシリーズのように、二眼レフは「歩き回るカメラ」ではないからだと思います。どちらかというと、「目的地カメラ」というか、撮りたい場所に着くまでバッグにしまっておくタイプではないでしょうか。


少しだけ経験談を話すと、僕も昔少しの期間マミヤC330を持っていたことがあります。肩にかけて一日歩いたら、金属フレームが腰骨に当たってアザができていました。でもそれが手放した理由ではなく……実は1:1フォーマットで構図を決めるのが苦手だったからなんです。スクエアで撮れる人、ほんとうに尊敬します！6×6の世界に没頭できる人たちは本当にすごいです。

 

Going from a large camera, I’d like to end this column entry with two 35mm compacts:
大きなカメラの次は、小さな35mmコンパクトを2台紹介して、今回のコラムを締めたいと思います。

 

6.

Kodak KB10

 

This is the first- and possibly only(?) appearance of a Kodak KB 10 on Tokyo Camera Style.
This was a Hecho en México Kodak from 1997(?). The photographer, a man visiting Tokyo from Mexico, told me his father gave it to him when he was five years old! He added that this camera was quite popular in Mexico. I don’t know how many are still snapping away- or how much used ones might be, but no doubt the personal legacy this one has to its owner is priceless.


Tokyo Camera StyleにKodak KB10が登場するのは初めて、唯一かもしれません。これは1997年頃のメキシコ製コダックです。撮っていた男性はメキシコから来た旅行者で「5歳のときに父親からもらったんだ」と教えてくれました。このカメラは当時メキシコで人気だったそうです。今どれだけ現役が残っているのか、そして中古相場がいくらなのかは分かりませんが、この個体が彼にとって“かけがえのない一本”だということは間違いありません。

一緒にいた若い女性は、お父さんから受け継いだXAを持っていました。

 


7.

Olympus XA

 

This is one of those cameras which remains an unbeatable classic. The fact that it is a legacy camera, too, is wonderful. Who hasn’t bought a used camera and wondered where it had been, and what it had photographed, and by who? With cameras like these, handed down by parents, their children already know. Here’s to more years and memories with this tiny, gem-like rangefinder.


これは、今もなお不動の名機として愛され続ける1台。そのうえ「受け継がれてきたカメラ」というのがまたいいですよね。中古カメラを買ったときに「このカメラはどこを旅して、誰に撮られてきたんだろう」と思いを馳せることは誰しもあるはず。でもこうして親から子へ渡ったカメラなら、その物語を最初から知っているんですよね。


この小さな宝石のようなレンジファインダーとともに、これからも素敵な思い出が増えていきますように。
