47 Tomo Kosuga トモコスガ『Parascapes』

While still only March, Tomo Kosuga’s charming Parascapes is my favorite photobook of 2026. 

In Japanese, the word “photobook” is 「写真集」i.e.”photograph” 「写真」 with the suffix　collection「集」 (as opposed to 「本」”book”). Photo Collection.

 “Collection” is an apt description for Parascapes. The slack this descriptor possesses allows for a sense of freedom- and a sense of humor. 

The binding in particular is interesting. Constructed in the “snake book” method, Parascapes is comprised of a single sheet of laminated paper that’s been hand-cut and folded into position by the artist himself.  That’s right- the book is bound together by not glue or stitching- but, perhaps like human relationships, by its very self. 

Such an unconventional construction lends itself to an unconventional experience.  You start at the title page and flip the pages up- and then to the right- and then upside-down- and around again up again flip flip flip to the last page- follow its course by turning it once over again, and the journey continues. By the time you think you’ve finished, the cover’s reappearance means you’ve already begun, again.

A paper-snake eating its photo-tail- a jumbled Jacobs Ladder of memories and time. 

With its bright yellow, boxy font and vivid color palette, at first glance, Parascapes has the look of a vintage, accordion-folded tourist postcard collection. The images throughout have a splendid look to them that echo print quality of decades past. 

As for the pictures themselves? They say wherever you go there you are- and it’s twice as true for couples. Especially with a camera involved.  

Mrs. Kosuga – never named, perhaps out of privacy- holds a similar, central spot in each picture.  She looks straight at her husband, into the lens and the future. Mr. Kosuga says in the books accompanying letter that these photos cover nearly twenty years- and while she defies aging, the passage of time appears through the changing of seasons and locations and hairstyles. And yet, in each picture her expression wryly stays almost the same. Like so many other great Wife Pictures, she is definitely in on the bit- and it’s her cooperation that gives the project such life.

Mr. Kosuga states that the book’s title is a portmanteau of “Parallel” and “landscape”. 

Within these “parascapes”, the lives of two unique individuals run side by side along time.

What’s perpendicular to all this is the lens pointing straight ahead- simultaneously at her and into the past and future. Acrs of commemoration, amusement, love-  As I re-flip through these glossy pages I can’t help but feel that something illuminating the essence of photography between two people comes tumbling out into the open. 

まだ3月ですが、トモ・コスガの『Parascapes』は私にとって2026年のベスト写真集です。

日本語で「写真集」という言葉は、「写真（photograph）」と「集（collection）」を組み合わせたもので、「本（book）」とは少し意味合いが異なります。この『Parascapes』はまさに「コレクション」と呼ぶにふさわしい作品です。この表現のゆるやかさが、自由さとユーモアを感じさせます。

特に製本方法が興味深いです。「蛇腹本（snake book）」の手法で作られた『Parascapes』は、ラミネート加工された1枚のA2紙を作者自身がカッターで切り、折りたたんで組み上げた構造になっています。接着剤でも糸でもなく、人間関係のように“自らの力で”つながっているのです。

このような型破りな製本は、読者に型破りな体験をもたらします。タイトルページから始まり、ページを上にめくり、次に右に、逆さまに、また上へ、めくりめくりめくりめくって最後のページへ一度ひっくり返して進むことで、旅は続きます。終わったと思ったときには、表紙が再び現れ、またこの旅を始まっているのです。まるで自分の尾を食べる紙の蛇のように、記憶と時間が絡み合っているのです。

表紙は、明るい黄色の角ばったフォントと鮮やかなカラーパレットにより、一見するとヴィンテージのお土産ポストカード集のようにも見えます。全体の写真も、過去数十年の印刷の美しさを思わせる、素晴らしい仕上がりです。

「どこへ行こうとも、そこに自分がいる」という言葉がありますが、これはカップルにとって倍当てはまると思います。そこにカメラが関わる場合、なおさらです。

コスガ夫人（奥さんの名前は明かされていません、プライバシーのためでしょう。そこも好きです）は、どの写真でも中心の位置にいます。全枚、彼女は夫の方をまっすぐ見つめ、レンズと未来を見据えています。

写真集に付属する手紙によると、これらの写真は20年近くにわたるものですが、エイジング出来ない彼女は年を取らず、季節や場所、髪型の変化を通じて時間の経過が表れています。それでも、彼女の表情はどの写真でもほとんど変わらず、微かに皮肉めいています。他の多くの素晴らしい「妻の写真」と同様、彼女もこの作品に協力的であり、その協力こそがこのプロジェクトに命を吹き込んでいます。

コスガ氏によると、タイトルの『Parascapes（パラスケープ）』とは「Parallel（平行）」と「Landscape（風景）」の造語だそうです。この「パラスケープ」の中で、2人の個性豊かな人生が並行して時間の中を流れます。

まっすぐ前を向くレンズは、彼女にも過去にも未来にも同時に向けられています。記念、遊び、愛…。この光沢あるページをめくり直すたびに、二人の間の「写真」の本質を照らす何かが、自然と現れてくるのを感じます。やっぱり、すごい。

コスガさん、ずっとずっと撮り続けてください。

John Sypal

1979年、アメリカ・ネブラスカ生まれ。2004年、ネブラスカ大学を卒業後に来日し、2005年より写真展を多数開催。2010年にTotem Pole Photo Galleryへ加入、2012年より「随写」シリーズをはじめ、多くの作品を発表し続けている。また、東京の写真文化を日常的に取材し、「Tokyo Camera Style」と題したブログやインスタグラムを通して積極的に発信している。写真集に『Tokyo Camera Style』（Thames & Hudson社）、『随写』（禅フォトギャラリー）がある。
