【2】WHO? (1) 誰の本ですか？

・Compiled by fifty-four photographers.　

54名の写真家がそれぞれ作ったリストが収録されています。

【3】Is it Photo Book or Photobook?　

「写真集」は英語で「Photo Book」「Photobook」のどちらでしょうか。

・I’m actually still not sure.  

・I prefer “Photobook”.　

実はわかりません。個人的には「Photobook」とワンワードの方が好きです。
 

【4】Ok, Sure. WHAT photobooks?   

それでは、どのような内容の写真集でしょうか。

・Formative ones. 

・Books that mean something to the artists approached to participate- books that fed their curiosity or opened up their paths in photography. 

・It’s (obviously) comparable to asking influential musicians which albums formed their understanding of music.

・ The lists reflect personal value, opposed to collector value. 

・Some are common, others rare and expensive. 

・But to the photographers? 

・Priceless.

これは、それぞれの写真家が影響を受けた本のリストです。好奇心を刺激したり、価値観、写真の道を拓いた写真集です。ミュージシャンに「どのアルバムが自身の音楽を形成したか」尋ねるのと同じです。リストにあがっている写真集は市場価値と関係なく、個人の価値を反映したものです。

【5】HOW? 　いつどこから出版されたのでしょうか。

・Published by (now closed) San Francisco Photography Gallery, Pier 24.

・Published in 2024.

閉廊してしまいましたが、サンフランシスコの写真ギャラリー「Pier 24」によって2024年に出版されました。

【7】WHO? (3)  

・ Like I said, Fifty-four photographers from around the world shared their lists for the book.

・This cohort includes four Japanese artists: Rinko Kawauchi, Momo Okabe, Koji Onaka, Daisuke Yokota.

54名の世界的な写真家がこの本のためにリストを公開しました。日本人は川内倫子、岡部桃、尾仲浩二、 横田大輔の4名参加しています。

【8】 WHY does a photobook have a credit for a sculptor?

 写真集なのに「彫刻家」のクレジットがあるのはなぜですか？

・Fair question! 

・The photographs in the book are of sculptures of photobooks.

いい質問ですね。この本の写真はすべて「写真集の彫刻」です。

【9】 WHAT?  どういうことでしょうか。

・That’s right, the images are of life-sized, hand-made reproductions/constructions of by artist Libby Black. 

・She recreated one book from each list. 

・Her creations are charming and have a hand-made quality that espouses a human connection.

・Not using actual books is a supremely clever way to illustrate a book on books.

・These sculptures free the books from reality, which presents them not as collectible artifacts but rather ideas or memories- you know, that place in your head where photos meet your mind. Something softer and more malleable. 

そうです！写っているのは「本物」ではなくて、リビ・ブラック氏が手製したレプリカの本なのです。

それぞれリストから一冊を作っています。彼女の作品は魅力的で、人とのつながりを大切にするハンドメイドの良さがあります。「本に関する本」を説明する本ですが、実際の写真集の物撮りを用いないことはすごく面白いアイディアだと思います。

【10】 WHO (4) is this book for?

この本は誰のためのものでしょうか。

・ This is admittedly a specialist book.

・ If photography in the popular sense is a vast, often shallow ocean, this book is a deep pond. ・What I mean is, while it probably won’t appeal to most people- even those who enjoy or make a living with photography- those who do “get” what it offers should find it deeply fascinating. 

・I’d say that if you’re familiar with at least four or five of the contributing photographers it is well worth adding to your bookshelf.

・This means it’ll probably appeal to keenly obsessed photography fans more than casual snapshooters or digital camera review website article commenters. 

・Then again, who knows? Exposure to this book can do no harm- and could possibly send someone who’s never heard of any of these artists into an intellectual, photographic growth spurt. 

間違いなくこれは専門書です。写真が広大で浅い海だとすれば、本書は深い池のようです。写真が好きな人、写真で生計を立てている人であっても、この本を読んで魅力を感じる人は少ないかもしれません。しかし少なくとも興味のある写真家が4〜5人載っているならば、本棚に加える価値があると思います。この写真集に触れて損をすることはありませんし、本書で初めて出会うアーティストがいれば、いっそう写真的な成長へとあなたを駆り立てるかもしれません。

【11】 Most listed book?  

一番リストアップされた写真集は？ 

・Unsurprisingly (and to me, fittingly) it’s Robert Frank’s “The Americans”. 

・It’s listed twelve times and was sculpted twice. 

・It is on my personal list, too. 

ロバート・フランク『The Americans』です。本書の中で12回リストアップされ、2回彫られた本でした。私の個人的リストにも入っている一冊です。

【12】Most listed Japanese book?

最も多くリストアップされた日本の写真集は？

・Six photographers included Masahisa Fukase’s Ravens.

・Interestingly, none of the four Japanese photographers included in the project listed neither Ravens or any other Fukase book. 

・However, three of those four Japanese members each list at least one book by Nobuyoshi Araki. 

・Japanese photographers were also the only ones who included any Araki book in their list. 

それは深瀬昌久の『鴉』です。興味深いことに、このプロジェクトに参加した4名の日本人の誰ひとりとして『鴉』をはじめ深瀬さんの写真集を挙げていませんでした。しかし4名中の3名は、荒木経惟の写真集をリストアップしていました。また、荒木さんの写真集をリストに入れたのは日本人写真家だけでした。

【13】Did many other Japanese books make the list?

日本の写真集はその他にもリストアップされていたのでしょうか。

・ Yes, quite a few.  

・ Three different titles of Rinko Kawauchi (who herself contributed a list of books) appear in the lists of her international peers. 

・I was surprised to see a Kishin Shinoyama book appear (John Gossage included “A Fine Day” in his list)

たくさんリストアップされていました。川内倫子（彼女自身もリストを寄稿しています）は異なる3冊が国際的な写真家のリストに掲載されていました。

【14】Other Japanese photobook surprises?

日本の写真家にたいして面白い発見ありましたか？

・I hope that Koji Onaka’s mention of the book Promised Land gets a few people interested in the work of photographer Susumu Fujita.

・Speaking of Onaka, the book sculpted/illustrated for his list is a personal favorite of mine, too: Shunju Dodo’s Horizon Far and Away 1968-1977. 

・Look at this!　

尾仲浩二が藤田進『約束の地』について言及したことで、興味をもつ人が少しでも増えたら嬉しいです。尾仲さんといえば、彼のリストの中で、個人的にも好きな一冊がありました。百々俊二『遙かなる地平 1968-1977』です。

【15】 What lines from Mr. McCall’s written introduction resonated with you most?

ギャラリーオーナーのマッコールさんのエッセイで一番響いた言葉はなんでしたか？

・This paragraph! 

・“I have long been fascinated by artistic linages and how and where photographers slot themselves -consciously or unconsciously- within various strands of photography’s history. I think these lists help us understand how the participating artists see themselves within the medium’s tangled branches and forking paths. Beyond that, each list has its own unique attributes- books I’ve never heard of, for instance, or those that I would have never imagined appearing on that particular photographer’s list. Each list provides a small window that better enables us to understand and appreciate a photographer’s work. I’ve also noticed certain books that have clearly had a recurring impact on particular generations (Ravens, by Masahisa Fukase, for example seems to be one such). "

「私は長い間、芸術的な系譜や、写真の歴史のさまざまな筋の中で、写真家が意識的に、あるいは無意識的に、自分自身をどのように、どこに位置づけるかに魅了されてきた。このリストは、参加したアーティストたちが、写真というメディアのもつれた枝や分かれ道の中で、自分自身をどのように捉えているかを理解するのに役立つと思う。例えば、私が聞いたこともないような本や、特定の写真家のリストに載るとは想像もしなかったような本などだ。それぞれのリストは、写真家の仕事を理解し、鑑賞するための小さな窓を提供してくれる。また、特定の世代に繰り返し影響を与えていることが明らかな本があることにも気づいた（例えば、深瀬昌久『鴉』もそのひとつだ）。」

【16】 What about the book’s construction? 本の作りは？

・ It’s a full-color, A4-ish hardcover. 

・I don’t know the technical term for how the perfect-bound book block is attached at the rear cover. 

・The book opens easily and wide, which is helpful because most likely you’ll want it open next to you as you search for previously unheard-of book titles online.

印刷はカラーで、サイズはA4ほどのハードカバーです。この本は大きく開くので、今まで聞いたことのないような写真集のタイトルをネットで検索する際に、パソコンの横で開いておけるので便利です。

【17】 And the Design? デザインは？

・ The book looks like one of Libby Black’s sculptures.

・ It’s clean, with a vivid-red cover and tempera-painted, hand-drawn text. 

・I could be wrong, but not many non-Japanese photobooks have hand-written titles on their spines.  

たしかにこの本は彫刻家のブラックさんの作品集に見えます。表紙はビビッドで鮮やかな赤、本文はテンペラで描かれているようです。 ちなみに本の背のタイトルは手書きだそうです。欧米の写真集にとって少し珍しい気がします。

【18】How long can you spend with this book? 

この本は長く楽しむことができるでしょうか？

・You can spend hours with this book. Depending on your interest in the listed photographers or the content of their lists.

・Its deceptively simple- just a bunch of lists- but this is what makes it so complex.

・I have been through its pages many, many times- and each encounter can put you down a tantalizing rabbit hole of photographic fascination.

・ This book an invaluable resource for seeing what books makes your favorite photographer’s shutter snap. 

・Or pages flip.

大変長く、深く楽しめるはずです！最初は簡単なコンセプトだと思うかもしれませんが、そのシンプルさこそ複雑です。 私はもう何度も何度もこの本を読み返しているのですが、毎回違う想いや、調べたくなることが出てきます。やっぱりこの本は、お気に入りの写真家がどんな写真集に影響を受けたのか、情報は貴重な資料だと感じさせてくれます。

【19】Other thoughts?  他には？

 a. The photographers are listed alphabetically

 b.  The list of photographers on page 1 does not include page numbers to their individual lists.  (see (a.), above)

 c. Most lists stand alone, but a few include short statements from the list-makers.

 d. These statements are illuminating- and in their brevity, say just enough.

 e. The accompanying essays by McCall and Aletti are wonderfully written.

 d. Just when you think you’re done with it, a title or connection triggers an impulse to look at the lists another way. 

 f. Being in possession of Lee Friedlander’s photobook list is a treasure beyond value.

写真家はアルファベット順。1ページ目の写真家リストには、個々のリストのページ番号が含まれていません。ほとんどのリストは独立していますが、リスト作成者の短いコメントを含むものもあります。その言葉は示唆に富んでおり、簡潔であるがゆえに十分なことを物語っています。また、マッコールとアレッティによるエッセイはとくに素晴らしいです。もう本を閉じよう思ったとき、タイトルや関連性によって、リストを別の角度から見たくなります。個人的に、リー・フリードランダーのフォトブックリストを手にすることは、価値以上の宝物です。

John Sypal

1979年、アメリカ・ネブラスカ生まれ。2004年、ネブラスカ大学を卒業後に来日し、2005年より写真展を多数開催。2010年にTotem Pole Photo Galleryへ加入、2012年より「随写」シリーズをはじめ、多くの作品を発表し続けている。また、東京の写真文化を日常的に取材し、「Tokyo Camera Style」と題したブログやインスタグラムを通して積極的に発信している。写真集に『Tokyo Camera Style』（Thames & Hudson社）、『随写』（禅フォトギャラリー）がある。
