Through February 22, 2026, some 200 pieces from the Yokohama City Camera and Photography Collection are showcased in an exhibition titled “Mr. Naylor’s Wunderkammer” in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino.

A veritable cabinet of photo-curiosities, this exhibition is comprised of items from the legendary collection of American industrialist, engineer, and inventor, Jack Naylor (1919-2007). Mr. Naylor’s life reads something out of an exciting novel, with chapters of piloting P-51 Mustangs in combat over Europe, flying a B-24 in the Ploiesti raids over Romania, all while befriending photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White in the war, with stints as a test pilot after. Upon completing his education in engineering, he later went on to invent an automotive technology that has been implemented into every single car design since its release. He additionally headed his own manufacturing company and sat on the boards of directors of several others. And if he wasn’t busy enough, all the while he was also deeply passionate about photography and collecting the technology that made it possible. His legendary collection of cameras and photographic history was a grand expression of his respect and fascination for the medium.

For many years now, items from the Naylor collection have been annually exhibited at Yokohama Civic Art Gallery. This 2026 show is an overview of photographic history and expression told through the processes and technology of the times and exhibited in a delightful, accessible form across several rooms. Viewers- both camera fans and the general public- are offered a chance to see a first-hand view of photography’s origins through the end of the 20th century.

This eclectic, wide-ranging collection features some rare items- including an original copy of Fox Talbot’s “The Pencil of Nature”(1846), many daguerreotypes, toy cameras, and an extremely rare and extremely gold Leica Luxus (1930). There’s even a massive USAF reconnaissance camera unit on display. Rather than a prescribed hierarchy, Mr. Naylor’s open-hearted interest towards seemingly all things photographic could be a lesson for our fractured, scattered modern world.

I left the gallery feeling quite moved by Naylor’s uniquely broad love for not just the tools but Photography itself. The show offers a lot to see- and a lot to think about. His Wikipedia page states that he brought along a camera while on missions in his B-24 over Europe. That’s evidence of a deeply held curiosity and compulsion for exploring the world with a lens. Looking at the photo prints exhibited here- in particular the ones by Jacques Henri Lartigue, Lee Friedlander, and Ansel Adams- I can tell that he understood well that photography’s ability for expression has always been tied to technology- but it’s the human touch coupled with a desire for remembrance, permanence, and beauty which allow photographs to affect not just our eyes but our hearts, as well.

横浜市民ギャラリーあざみ野では、2026年2月22日まで、開館20周年を記念して「Mr.ネイラーの驚異の部屋」と題した展覧会が開催されています。本展では、横浜市所蔵カメラ・写真コレクションより約200点が展示されています。

まさに“写真の驚異の部屋”と言える本展は、アメリカの伝説的な実業家であり、エンジニア、発明家でもあったジャック・ネイラー（1919–2007）のコレクションによって構成されています。彼の人生は、まるで冒険小説のようです。第二次世界大戦中には、ヨーロッパ上空でP-51マスタングを操縦し、ルーマニアのプロイェシュティ爆撃ではB-24に搭乗。戦時中には写真報道家マーガレット・バーク＝ホワイトとも親交を深め、戦後はテストパイロットとしても活躍しました。その後、工学の教育を修了し、自動車技術における発明を成し遂げます。その技術は発表以来、今日に至るまで、すべての自動車設計に取り入れられているといいます。さらに自身の製造会社を経営し、複数の企業で取締役も務めました。

しかしそれだけに留まりません。彼は常に写真と、その成立を支える技術に深い情熱を注いでいました。ネイラーの伝説的なカメラおよび写真史コレクションは、写真というメディアへの敬意と尽きることのない好奇心の、壮大な結晶です。

ネイラー・コレクションは、長年にわたり横浜市民ギャラリーで毎年展示されてきました。本展は、写真の技法や技術の変遷を軸に、写真表現の歴史を概観する内容となっており、複数の展示室を使って、親しみやすく楽しい構成で紹介されています。カメラ愛好家はもちろん、一般の来場者も、写真の黎明期から20世紀末までを実物資料を通して体感することができます。

この幅広く多彩なコレクションには、貴重な作品が数多く含まれています。フォックス・タルボットによる写真集『自然の鉛筆（The Pencil of Nature）』（1846年）の初版本、数多くのダゲレオタイプ、トイカメラ、そして1930年製の極めて希少かつ黄金に輝くライカ・ラクサス（Leica Luxus）。さらには、米空軍の大型偵察カメラユニットまで展示されています。そこには、序列や価値観を押し付けるような展示構成はありません。写真に関わるあらゆるものに心を開いて向き合うネイラー氏の姿勢は、分断と断片化が進む現代社会にとって、一つの示唆を与えてくれるようにも思えます。

私はこの展覧会を観終え、写真という行為そのもの、そしてその道具に対するネイラーの並外れて広い愛情に、深く心を動かされた。見どころは多く、同時に考えさせられる点も多いです。彼のウィキペディアによれば、ヨーロッパ上空でB-24に搭乗していた任務中にも、彼はカメラを携行していたといいます。それは、レンズを通して世界を探求せずにはいられない、強い好奇心と衝動の表れでしょう。

展示されているプリント作品――とりわけジャック＝アンリ・ラルティーグ、リー・フリードランダー、アンセル・アダムスの作品を見ていると、ネイラーがよく理解していたことが伝わってきます。写真の表現力は常に技術と結びついてきましたが、そこに人間の手触りと、記憶、永続性、美への欲求が加わることで、写真は単に目に訴えるだけでなく、私たちの心にまで深く届くものになるのだ、と。
