With a simple compact camera, I started photography in 2016.

In the flow of daily life are beautiful moments- I want to capture them both on film and in my heart.

With that feeling in mind, I continue taking photographs every day.

I first encountered Maki Morimoto’s wonderful photography at Place M in Shinjuku in March of 2021. Immediately- I mean, seriously- several seconds after entering the space- I became a fan. It was the freshness of the pictures- the immediacy in them which were (and remain) so charming.

That evening, after returning home I made a brief post on the show on the Tokyo Camera Style website.

A Contax T2 in the hand of a young woman with a great eye is a wonderful thing- Maki Morimoto’s vivid, beautiful- and debut(!) exhibition “My Forest” was proof. She has a T2 and a Yashica Samurai- but even more importantly, has friends and an interest in living life. I can’t wait for her next show.

That “next show” turned out to be just a little over a year later. The venue was Epsite Gallery at Epson Square in Marunouchi, Tokyo. The title remained the same: “Watshi No Mori”- now, this could be directly translated into “My Forest” but doing so dulls the cleverness of the title and how it relates to the “mori” in her last name. This name-relation amplifies the personal connection between the artist and her work.

Mormimoto’s Epson show was awarded after an open call for entries by the gallery. The selection committee consisted of photographer Yoshihiko Ueda and Toshihiro Hayami, the founder of the recent T3 photo festival. In a photo world of Concepts and Messages it was heartening to see work such as Morimoto’s appreciated this way. In his comments on her work Ueda noted that the strength of her line of sight transcends ideas about pictures being “good or bad”. This is precisely what captivated me at Place M last year.

For this Epsite show, Morimoto selected new pictures taken within the past year. Epson provided means for inkjet prints in a variety of sizes- and as you can see, rather than the traditional, single row of frames the pictures were exhibited in a way that echoes how memories can feel- here and there, up and down, and in that unexplainable order in which they arise.

The pictures! Yes, they are beautiful. They are vivid. They are reactions to life, to living. They are bright and have a particular glow that’s hard to explain. There’s something about wetness and light in them. Morimoto is interested in her friends, sure- but also light and movement and skin and how film makes these sorts of things if not more beautiful, beautiful in a different, possessable way.

I left this show thinking the same as before- I can’t wait for her next exhibition.

A photobook would be great, too.

2016年終わり頃からコンパクトフィルムカメラで

写真を撮り始めました。

止まることなく流れる日常の中でいまここに在ることの美しさを

写真に写し、心に焼き付けたい。

そんな気持ちで日々撮っています。

森本眞生

2021年3月、新宿にあるPlace Mで初めて森本眞生さんの写真と出会いました。ギャラリーに入った瞬間ファンになりました。私は元々「日記スナップ派」ですけど、やっぱり森本さんの写真の新鮮さ、即物的な感じがとても魅力的だったのです。帰宅した夜、 Tokyo Camera Style のブログにこのようなことを書きました。

コンタックスT2を手にした、目の肥えた若い女性は素晴らしいことである。森本眞生の鮮やかで美しいデビュー展「わたしの森」がその証だ。彼女はT2とヤシカサムライを持っているが、さらに重要なのは、友人と生きることへの関心を持っていることだ。次の展示が待ち遠しい。

その「次の展示」はたった1年後でした。

今回は新宿ではなくて、エプソンスクエア丸の内のエプサイトでした。タイトルはPlace Mと同じ。「わたしの森」はなかなかいいセンスです。直接英語に翻訳できなくもないですが "My Forest"にしてしまったら「森本」の「森」という個人的なニュアンスが消えてしまう気がします。"Watshi No Mori"が一番いいと思います。

エプサイトでの森本さんの展示は、ギャラリーの公募によるものです。選考委員は、写真家の上田義彦氏と、T3フォトフェスティバルのファウンダーである速水惟広氏です。コンセプトやメッセージ性が強く注目されている写真の世界において、森本さんのようなスナップ作品がこのように評価されるのは大変嬉しいことです。上田さんは森本さんの作品について、「写真が上手い、下手といったこと以上に作者の『視線の強度』を感じる作品だ」と評しています。昨年のPlace M展で私が魅了されたのは、まさにこの点でした。

今回のエプサイトの展示では、森本さんがこの1年間に撮影した新作の写真がセレクトされています。

プリントはエプソンのインクジェットプリンターによって様々なサイズ。従来の一列のフレームではなく、見てのとおりあちこち上下に、説明のつかない順序でまるで記憶が生まれるような展示構成でした。

さて、写真だ。

美しいのです。鮮やかである。それらは人生、生活に対する反応です。明るくて、不思議なぐらい特別な輝きを持っています。湿潤と光のようなものがあります。

森本さんは友人に興味があるのは確かですが、光や動き、肌にも興味があり、フィルムがこれらのものを、より美しいとは言えないまでも、別の意味で、紙で目や心で攫むことできるように美しくしてくれるのです。

去年のPlace M展の帰りのように今回もおなじことを感じていた。それは「次の展示が待ち遠しい」。

写真集もいいな…。

1979年、アメリカ・ネブラスカ生まれ。2004年、ネブラスカ大学を卒業後に来日し、2005年より写真展を多数開催。2010年にTotem Pole Photo Galleryへ加入、2012年より「随写」シリーズをはじめ、多くの作品を発表し続けている。また、東京の写真文化を日常的に取材し、「Tokyo Camera Style」と題したブログやインスタグラムを通して積極的に発信している。写真集に『Tokyo Camera Style』（Thames & Hudson社）、『随写』（禅フォトギャラリー）がある。
