Tokyo Photo Guide Vol.8 Ginza／銀座

It’s said that Tokyo’s Ginza district is home to over 100 art galleries. These range from tiny rooms tucked deep away in mixed-use buildings to larger street-level commercial galleries that deal in contemporary art.  Several spots focus on photography- and, strung together into a gallery walk, offer a full afternoon of photographic encounters. Here are a few to check out when visiting Ginza.

 

東京・銀座には100軒を超えるアートギャラリーがあると言われています。雑居ビルの奥にひっそりと佇む小さなスペースから、ストリートレベルで現代美術を扱う大規模な商業ギャラリーまで、その形態はさまざまです。なかでも写真に特化した場所も多く、いくつかを組み合わせて巡れば、銀座で丸一日写真に浸ることができます。ここでは、銀座に訪れる際に立ち寄りたいギャラリーをいくつかご紹介します。

 

［Store & Gallery］

1.  Leica Store Ginza

 

 

Above the Leica Ginza store are two gallery spaces. The first, Leica Gallery Tokyo, hosts high-quality exhibitions approximately four times a year. Its interior is sleek and modern, defined by walls of glass. A glossy black interior wall contrasts strikingly with the windows opposite, where frames mounted directly on the glass gives viewers a distinctive experience alternating between photographs and glimpses of the Ginza street below. Near the entrance, shelves of photobooks invite browsing, while Leica’s service counter is situated at the far end of the space.

 

Just down the hall is the Leica Professional Store Tokyo, Leica’s first professional retail space. It sells both current products and certified pre-owned gear and functions as an exhibition space showcasing the work of Leica photographers.

 

 

ライカ銀座店の2階には、2つのギャラリースペースがあります。ひとつは「ライカギャラリー東京」で、年間四回程の質の高い展覧会が開催されます。館内はガラス壁を基調とした洗練されたモダンな空間で、艶やかな黒い内壁と向かい合う大きな窓が印象的なコントラストを生み出しています。ガラス面に直接展示された作品は、写真と銀座の街並みが交互に視界に入る独特の鑑賞体験をもたらします。入口付近には写真集の棚があり、奥にはライカカスタマーケアのカウンターが設けられています。

 

 

階段を上がって右に廊下を進むと「ライカ プロフェッショナルストア東京」があります。ライカ初のプロフェッショナル向けストアであり、現行製品や認定中古品の販売をしているのと同時に、ライカフォトグラファーの作品を紹介する展示会場としても機能しています。

2. Leica GINZA SIX

 

 

A few blocks east from the Leica Ginza Store, where the Leica Gallery Tokyo is the massive GINZA SIX complex.  This gleaming, sophisticated structure is largest commercial facility in the area. You’ll find Leica Store Ginza Six on the 5th floor. In addition to Leica products and related goods, visitors can view the work by Leica photographers in the store’s exhibition space. 

 

ライカギャラリー東京のあるライカ銀座店から東へ数ブロック進むと、巨大な複合施設「GINZA SIX」があります。きらびやかで洗練されたこの建物は、銀座エリアで最大規模の商業施設です。5階には「ライカストア ギンザシックス」があり、ライカ製品や関連グッズに加えて、店内の展示スペースではライカフォトグラファーの作品を鑑賞することができます。

 

 

 

 

［Book Shop］

3. Ginza Tsutaya Books

 

 

The Ginza branch, while not as large as the Tsutaya flagship store in Daikanyama, certainly has one of the best photography sections in any Tokyo bookstore. Here you can browse its large selection of imported photobooks as well as shelves full of offerings by Japanese publishers. Complimenting the aisles of contemporary publications is a curated section of vintage Japanese photobooks. You’ll also find some framed, original prints displayed amongst the shelves. If that wasn’t enough, this store also regularly does pop-up collaborations with publishers and photographers- so there is always something to see- and add to your shelves. Note: You know the saying “time flies when you’re having fun”? This bookstore is very fun- keep an eye on your watch if you’re on a schedule!

 

代官山ほどの規模はありませんが、銀座 蔦屋書店は東京の書店の中でも屈指の写真コーナーを誇ります。輸入フォトブックの豊富なセレクションに加え、日本の出版社による多彩な書籍も棚いっぱいに並んでいます。さらに、現代の出版物の合間には、厳選されたヴィンテージ写真集のコーナーも設けられています。棚のあちこちにはオリジナルプリントの額装作品も展示されており、まるで小さなギャラリーのような空間です。

 

 

それだけではなく、この書店では出版社や写真家とのポップアップコラボレーションも定期的に行われており、訪れるたびに新しい発見があり、コレクションに加えたくなる一冊に出会えるはずです。「楽しい時間はあっという間に過ぎる」とよく言われますが、この書店はまさにその通り。予定がある方は時計を忘れずにチェックしてください！

4. Canon Gallery Ginza

 


The current itineration of the Canon Salon which opened in 1973, this space opened in 2005 as the Canon Gallery Ginza. Both solo and group shows are held here, with exhibitions changing every two weeks.  Next door is “Canon Photo House Ginza”, a customer-focused showroom of Canon photographic gear and printers. 

 

1973年にオープンしたキヤノンサロンの現行形として、このスペースは2005年に「キヤノンギャラリー銀座」として開設されました。個展・グループ展の両方が開催され、展示内容は2週間ごとに入れ替わります。隣には「キヤノンフォトハウス銀座」があり、キヤノンのカメラやプリンターなど、顧客向けのショールームとして利用できます。

4. Akio Nagisawa Gallery Ginza 

 


The anchor of the Tokyo Akio Nagisawa gallery trio, the spacious Ginza branch of this fine art commercial gallery generally showcases masters of Japanese postwar photography. These exhibitions are often accompanied by high quality photobooks produced by Akio Nagisawa Publishing. It’s a must-visit for fans of photographers such as Daido Moriyama, Issei Suda, Sakiko Nomura, to name but a few. 

 

東京に展開するAkio Nagasawa Galleryの中核を担う銀座店は、広々とした空間を誇るファインアートの商業ギャラリーです。ここでは主に、日本の戦後写真を代表する巨匠たちの作品が紹介されます。展覧会に合わせて、Akio Nagisawa Publishingによる高品質な写真集が刊行されることも多く、見応えのある内容となっています。森山大道、須田一政、野村佐紀子といった写真家のファンにとっては必訪のスポットです。

6. Art Gallery M84

 


M84 is a cozy gallery tucked away behind Ginza’s Kabukiza theater. Opened in 2013, it mainly showcases photographic work. The gallery’s website offers generous installation views of their exhibitions: http://artgallery-m84.com/?cat=4 . I especially enjoyed the show of vintage prints of portraits from the Meiji era.

(Note: Some exhibitions here have an entrance fee.) 

 

M84は、銀座の歌舞伎座裏にひっそりと佇む居心地の良いギャラリーです。2013年にオープンして以来、主に写真作品を中心に紹介しています。ギャラリーのウェブサイトでは、展覧会の様子を豊富なインスタレーションビューで見ることができます。特に印象的だったのは、明治時代の肖像写真のヴィンテージプリント展でした。一部の展覧会は有料の場合があります。

5. Fuji Photo Gallery Ginza

 

 

Fuji Photo Gallery Ginza is part of CREATE, the professional photo lab service of Fujifilm Group. The lab offers professional grade film developing and printing- with samples of their services near the counter. To further support photographers, CREATE has four exhibition areas, providing space for solo or group exhibitions. Details and application materials are available on the CREATE website. 

 

富士フォトギャラリー銀座は、フジフイルムグループのプロフェッショナル写真ラボサービス「CREATE」の一部です。ラボでは、プロ仕様のフィルム現像やプリントを提供しており、カウンター付近でサービスのサンプルを見ることができます。さらに、写真家を支援するため、CREATEには4つの展示スペースがあり、個展やグループ展に利用可能です。詳細や申込書類はCREATEのウェブサイトでご覧いただけます。

6. Sony Imaging Gallery Ginza

 

  

Sony’s exhibition space exhibits images as framed prints or digitally through their 4K BRAVIA LCD TVs and video projectors. The gallery hosts both solo shows and group exhibitions, with frequent chances to see award-winning work from various photography contests. The gallery sits above two Sony product showrooms, so there is a lot to see here. The building is in central Ginza- and automotive fans will also no doubt enjoy the Nissan Crossing showrooms on the first and second floors.


ソニーイメージングギャラリー銀座では、作品を額装プリントとして展示するほか、4K BRAVIA液晶テレビやビデオプロジェクターを使ったデジタル展示も行われています。ギャラリーでは個展やグループ展の両方が開催されており、さまざまな写真コンテストで入賞した作品に触れられる機会も多くあります。

 

 

ギャラリーはソニー製品のショールームの上に位置しているため、展示以外にも見どころがたくさんあります。建物は銀座の中心部にあり、自動車ファンであれば1階と2階のニッサン・クロッシングのショールームも楽しめるでしょう。

8. CO-CO PHOTO SALON

 


Co-Co,  an abbreviation for "Contemporary Communication”, opened in 2021. The gallery website states that because photographic images can be seen anywhere, anytime through handheld devices that a gallery space designed to foster thoughtful communication about photography in person is needed. That’s a fine mission- and one which I personally hope will be brought into fruition by other dedicated photography spaces in the world. Good luck, Co-Co! 

 

CO-CO PHOTO SALON（CO-COは「Contemporary Communication」の略）は、2021年にオープンしました。ギャラリーのウェブサイトによると、写真作品は手持ちの端末を通じていつでもどこでも見ることができるため、写真について直接対話し、思考を深める場としてのギャラリースペースが求められているとのことです。その理念は素晴らしく、個人的には世界中の他の熱心な写真スペースでも実現されることを願っています。頑張れ、CO-CO！

Ginza is also home to some of the finest used camera shops in the world- but I left them off since there are now so many shop guides online. That said, as you walk between the galleries featured above, chances are you’ll pass by a few. I definitely suggest incorporating them into your time in Ginza.  

 

Final advice: since the introduction of photography in Japan Ginza has been a magnet for photographers- opportunities for pictures abound! Bring a camera!

 

銀座には世界でも有数の中古カメラ店も集まっていますが、現在はオンラインに多くのショップガイドがあるため、ここでは割愛しました。それでも、上記で紹介したギャラリーの間を歩いていると、いくつかの店の前を通ることになるでしょう。ぜひ銀座を訪れた際はいろいろ見て回ることをおすすめします。

 

最後にアドバイス！日本に写真が紹介されて以来、銀座は写真家たちにとっての磁場のような存在で、撮影のチャンスがあふれています。カメラを持って銀座へ行きましょう！
