This entry in my Tokyo photo guide series encompasses the areas of Harajuku, with its youth-centric vibe, and Omotesando, a neighborhood of upscale stores and designer atmosphere. This part of town is internationally known as a crucible of Japanese youth culture and fashion- amongst the seemingly countless niche clothing shops and high-end fashion stores are several spots of interest to photographers. 

 

今回の「Tokyo Photo Guide」は若者文化が色濃く感じられる原宿エリアと、洗練された雰囲気が漂う表参道エリアを取り上げます。この界隈は、日本の若者文化やファッションの発信地として国際的にも知られており、無数に並ぶ個性的なファッションショップやハイブランドの店舗の合間には、写真好きにとって見逃せないスポットもいくつか存在します。

 

［Camera Shop］

1. FILMCAMERA TOKYO

 

 

FILMCAMERA TOKYO is a crisp, stylish boutique located just a short walk north of the main Harajuku area. Their inventory is well-curated, featuring mint-condition examples of popular film camera models—many complete with their original boxes. Unlike the traditional glass cases found in most used camera shops, many of their cameras are displayed openly. This—along with their friendly staff—creates what feels like a more relaxed, approachable environment for young people getting into film gear. For those unable to visit Tokyo, Film Camera Tokyo has an online store with English support and international shipping options.

 

FILMCAMERA TOKYOは、原宿の中心エリアから北へ少し歩いた場所にある、洗練されスタイリッシュなブティックです。在庫は丁寧にセレクトされており、人気のフィルムカメラのモデルが新品同様の状態で並び、元箱付きのものも多数あります。


多くの中古カメラ店で見かけるガラスケースとは異なり、こちらでは多くのカメラがオープンに陳列されています。フレンドリーなスタッフさんの対応とあいまって、フィルムカメラに興味を持ち始めた若い世代にとっても親しみやすく、リラックスした雰囲気が魅力です。東京を訪れることができない方には、英語対応と海外発送に対応したオンラインストアも用意されていますのでそちらを利用することをオススメします！

 

Visitors to the store are also able to enjoy two shelves of camera-related books. I think I’ve seen THAT one before…

また、この店では、カメラに関連した書籍が並ぶ2つの棚も楽しむことができます。見たことある本を発見…！

Art Space AM

 

 

Tucked back in an unassuming building near exit 7 of Meijingumae metro station sits one of Tokyo’s most unique galleries: Art Space AM. Run by gallerist and curator Hisako Motoo, this darkened, cavernous exhibition space opened in 2014. Over the past decade it has been home to near-constant exhibitions of Nobuyoshi Araki’s latest work- indeed, there are far more days in a year when his photographs are on the walls here than not. 

 

Note: There is no signage for the gallery outside. To find it, enter the building, walk down the hall, and take the stairs up one floor. Stepping through AM’s narrow, corridor-like entrance reveals a different world.

明治神宮前駅の7番出口近く、控えめな建物の奥にひっそりと佇むのが、東京でも特にユニークなギャラリーのひとつである「Art Space AM」です。

 

ギャラリストでありキュレーターでもある本尾久子さんが運営するこの空間は2014年にオープンしました。この10年間、ここでは荒木経惟さんによる新作の展示がほぼ絶え間なく行われており、1年のうち彼の作品が壁に掛かっていない日のほうが少ないほどです。

 

ギャラリーの外には看板などの表示はありません。建物に入り、廊下を進み、階段を上って2階フロアにある、AMの細く通路のような入り口を抜けると、まるで別世界が広がっています。ギャラリーの雰囲気はExhibition Report Vol.28 Nobuyoshi Araki "Longing for Peace" 荒木経惟「ずーっと冬　春は来ない」を参照ください。

Leica Store Omotesando

ライカ表参道店

 

 

In a grey, angular building just a few steps off Cat Street, you’ll find Leica Store Omotesando—the company’s twelfth store in Japan.

 

Opened in 2024, its dynamic, seamless, and multi-level layout includes a large gallery space, a showroom floor for current products, and—down in the spacious, airy basement—a pre-owned boutique. While it’s well known that Tokyo has no shortage of pre-owned Leicas, it’s worth noting that this official shop is both very competitively priced and stocks "Leica Certified" gear, meaning that all items have been inspected and carefully refurbished by certified Leica technicians.

 

If you’re looking for a particular Leica lens or camera body, I recommend checking here first!
In addition to learning about Leica products from the welcoming, English-speaking staff, I encourage visitors to take their time enjoying exhibitions of Japanese and international photographers in the unique, tiered gallery space on the upper floor.

Omotesando is a natural fit for a Leica shop; likewise, the photographic culture it brings to the area is a valuable benefit.

 

 

キャットストリートから少し入ったところにグレーで角張った建物があるのですが、そこがライカ表参道店です。日本で12番目のライカストアです。

 


2024年にオープンしたこのライカ表参道店は、ダイナミックでシームレス、かつ多層構造のレイアウトを持ち、大きなギャラリースペース、新製品を含む現行製品を展示販売するフロア、そして広々として風通しの良い地下にはプレオウンドというライカの中古品を置いています。東京に中古のライカが豊富にあることはよく知られていますが、この公式ストアで販売されている中古製品はすべてライカ認定品であり、ライカの技術者によって点検・整備されていることが特長です。

 

 


特定のライカのレンズやカメラボディをお探しの場合は、まずはこちらをチェックすることをオススメします。友好的で英語も堪能なスタッフからライカ製品についていろいろ学べることはもちろん、段差空間を活かしたギャラリースペースでは国内外の写真家の展覧会をじっくりと楽しむことができます。
表参道という場所はライカストアにとって自然な場所であり、同時に写真文化はこのエリアにとって貴重な価値をもたらす事でしょう。

GR SPACE TOKYO

 


GR Space Tokyo is Ricoh’s showroom and “communication space” for their line of popular digital cameras. A tall, gently curving wall runs along the back of the venue, displaying regular exhibitions of photography created with GR cameras. Visitors are invited to enjoy a hands-on experience with the full product lineup, supported by friendly Ricoh staff who are on hand to answer questions and share their knowledge. 

 

GR SPACE TOKYOは、リコーの人気デジタルカメラ「GR」シリーズのショールーム兼「コミュニケーションスペース」です。会場の奥には緩やかにカーブを描く高い壁があり、GRカメラで撮影された写真の展示が定期的に行われています。訪れた人は、リコーのスタッフによる丁寧なサポートのもと、全製品ラインナップを実際に手に取って体験することができます。

GRの歴史に興味のある方には「GR HISTORY」の壁面も楽しめることでしょう。

 

 

GR Space Tokyo not only accepts GR items for repair, but it also features a small coffee shop. Ricoh’s dedication to the enjoyment of photography is further reflected in a generous, well-curated selection of photobooks—made available through a partnership with Book Obscura, a well-regarded photobook shop in Kichijoji.

SO BOOKS

 

 

While SO BOOKS might not technically be considered “Harajuku”, I’m gladly featuring it in this guide because 1.) Walking there from Harajuku station involves a pleasant downhill stroll past Yoyogi park, & 2.) It’s my favorite photobook shop in all of Tokyo.


Where do I even start? The books? Some are new, with most vintage- with a mix of Japanese and western titles. Photography is the mainstay, but on hand are excellent Art and Fashion books, too. The store’s stock is brilliantly curated, with every book in excellent condition. Not only is the shop owner, Ikuo Ogasawara, impressively knowledgeable about every title on his shelves, he even constructed the shelves himself. 

His shop is utterly respected and beloved by Tokyo’s creative culture. For example, in the summer of 2013, flood damage destroyed a truckload’s worth of rare books. Rather than watch a key pillar of the photobook community suffer, a group of photographers and a gallery came together to hold a charity fundraiser in support of a friend in need. SO BOOKS has that kind of importance- and inspires that kind of community.

 

So (!), if you only have time to visit one bookshop in Tokyo, make it this one. 

If you are unable to visit Harajuku- or even Japan- you’re in luck as the SO BOOKS website is an excellent resource for international orders.  

 

SO BOOKSは厳密には「原宿・表参道」エリアには含まれませんが、原宿駅から歩いて代々木公園の横を下る気持ちの良い散歩道の途中にあること、そして何より、私が東京で最も好きなフォトブックショップであることから、今回のガイドでぜひご紹介したいです。


店内に並んでいる本は新品もありますが、ほとんどがヴィンテージで、日本の本と洋書とが混在しています。写真集が中心ですが、素晴らしい素晴らしいアート本やファッションの本も並んでいます。品揃えは見事に厳選されており、どの本も状態が非常に良いのが特徴です。


店主の小笠原郁夫さんは、棚に並ぶすべてのタイトルに精通しているだけでなく、棚自体も自作してしまうほどの知識と情熱の持ち主です。このお店は東京のクリエイティブな文化に深く尊敬され、愛されています。2013年の夏、大雨によりトラック一台分もの貴重な本が被害を受けたものの、フォトブック・コミュニティの重要な柱を失うことを避けるため、写真家やギャラリーが協力してチャリティーイベントを開催し、支援しました。


SO BOOKSは重要な存在であり、コミュニティを生み出す場にもなっています。だからもし東京で一軒だけ本屋に行く時間があるなら、ここをオススメしたいです。原宿や日本に訪れることが難しい場合でも、SO BOOKSのウェブサイトは国際配送に対応しており、優れたリソースとなっています。

CHILES MEXICAN GRILL

 

 

As usual, I like to end these Tokyo guides with a recommended place to eat. For Harajuku, the choice was easy. Want good Mexican food? Then you need to head over to Chiles Mexican Grill. I love this place so much that I haven’t eaten anywhere else in Harajuku for years. 

 

When I first came to Japan in 1998, Mexican food was near impossible to come by. I think Chiles opened in the mid 2010s, and even though quite a few new burrito shops have sprung up around Tokyo in the past few years, it remains my favorite. You’ll find its colorful entrance on a side street near the east end of Takeshita-dori. 

While I’ve never actually been to Mexico, the food here is as good as anything I’ve had growing up in the American midwest (and yes, there are excellent Mexican restaurants in Nebraska.)  

 

いつものように、締めくくりにはオススメのご飯屋さんを紹介したいと思います。原宿で美味しいメキシコ料理が食べたいなら、間違いなく「CHILES MEXICAN GRILL」に行くべきです。私はこの店が大好きで、ここ数年、原宿で他の店に行っていません！

 

私が初めて日本に来た1998年当時、メキシコ料理を食べられる場所はほとんどありませんでした。CHILES MEXICAN GRILLは2010年代半ばにオープンしたと思いますが、その後数年間で東京には新しいブリトー店がいくつか増えたものの、今でもここが一番のお気に入りです。店舗は竹下通りの東端近くの脇道にあり、カラフルな入り口が目印です。

 

私は実はメキシコに行ったことはないのですが、ここの料理はアメリカ中西部で育った私が食べてきたものに匹敵するほど美味しいです（ちなみにネブラスカには素晴らしいメキシコ料理店があります）。


Everything on their menu is first-rate delicious, but my usual is their Pork Pibil burrito- a tortilla-wrapped pillow of slow-roasted and succulently flavored pork with pinto beans and salsa rice, topped with Chipotle mayo, and cheese.  This is what that looks like, and in their large size, no less:


メニューのどれも一級品ですが、私の定番は「ポーク・ピビル・ブリトー」。トルティーヤで包まれた、じっくりローストされてジューシーな豚肉にピント豆とサルサライスを合わせ、チポトレマヨとチーズがトッピングされた逸品です。写真はラージサイズ！

 


As you can see, it’s bigger than a Leica. And tastes far better, too. 

ご覧の通り、ライカよりも大きいです。そして味もずっとライカよりも美味しいです（笑）

It probably goes without saying, in addition to the photography-related spots listed above, the entire area is a rich, fascinating place to wander with a camera. (Car lovers, too, will find Omotesando on a Sunday afternoon to be a prime cruising spot for a riotous array of super cars and vintage restorations.)  

 

In fact, around here nearly everyone else has one around their neck. And with so many young people dressed up to be seen, it’s most likely got the most accommodating crowd for street portraiture or street photography you’ll find. 

 

もちろん、今回ご紹介した写真関連のスポットに加え、このエリア全体がカメラを持って散策するには豊かで魅力的な場所です。車好きの方なら、日曜の午後の表参道はスーパーカーやヴィンテージカーのカラフルなクルージングスポットとしても最高でしょう。このあたりではほとんどの人がカメラを首にかけています。しかも、多くの若者が見られることを意識しておしゃれをしているため、ポートレートやストリートスナップに最も適した人々が集まる場所と言えるでしょう。

 

 

On the same day that I visited the shops and spaces in this guide I stopped by the V Photobook Fair, held at "Creative Space Akademeia 21 Harajuku".  It was a cozy, casual event with nearly thirty booths belonging to Tokyo publishers and galleries. PCT too, was there.  These kinds of photo events are great- they're chances to meet and interact with real people over a shared interest and discover new artists and friendships.  

 

また、このガイドで紹介したお店やスポットを訪れた同じ日に「Creative Space Akademeia 21 Harajuku」で開催されていた「V Photobook Fair」にも立ち寄りました。東京の出版社やギャラリーが約30ブース出展する、こぢんまりとしたカジュアルなイベントでした。PCTも出展していました！こうした写真関連のイベントは本当に素晴らしいものです。共通の興味を通じて人と出会い、交流し、新しいアーティストや友情を発見することができるからです。
