This is part of an ongoing guide to Tokyo’s extensive photographic culture. While it’s written with first-time visitors in mind, I hope long-term residents find it useful, too.
The Roppongi area has long been (in)famous for its nightlife, but the past decade has seen it gain a deserved reputation as a spot for art and culture. While I’ve never actually been in a Roppongi club or bar, I frequent – and recommend- the following spots to to enjoy photography.
(NOTE: Two of the following three gallery venues are closed on Sundays. Considering a weekend visit, I suggest making this a Saturday afternoon activity.)
東京の六本木はある意味で夜の街として有名でしたが、ここ10年でアートとカルチャーの街としても注目されるようになりました。私は六本木のクラブやバーに入ったことはありませんが、「写真」を楽しむためのオススメスポットをご紹介します！
※これから紹介する3つのギャラリーのうち、2つは日曜定休です。週末しか行けない方は、土曜日に訪ねることをオススメします。

Fujifilm Square
フジフイルム スクエア
Located at the foot of the gigantic Tokyo Midtown complex, Fujifilm Square offers a variety of things to see. For fans of Fujifilm cameras, the “TOUCH FUJIFILM & IMAGING SERVICE COUNTER” is the place to see the company’s latest lineup or handle repair service needs.
With the goal of “promoting the values of photography”, Fujifilm Square boasts a small, but world-class Photo History Museum detailing the history of both the photographic medium and the company’s products. The wall of this museum exhibits some phenomenal work by a variety of photographic masters. I’ve never been disappointed by anything I’ve seen in this museum, and with free admission and its street-level location I tend to stop in every time I pass by.
Next to the museum is the larger, brighter Fujifilm Photo Salon Tokyo, a multi-exhibition space that showcases the wide-ranging work of photo clubs and individuals. Somewhat ironically, taking pictures inside Fujifilm Square is prohibited. (The neon Fujipet Camera sign near the side entrance is an exception.)
巨大複合施設「東京ミッドタウン」の1階にある「フジフイルム スクエア」には、さまざまな見どころがあります。富士フイルムのカメラファンは「TOUCH FUJIFILM & IMAGING SERVICE COUNTER」で最新のラインナップを見たり、修理サービスを受けることができます。
フジフイルム スクエアは「写真文化の発展に貢献する」という目標のもと、写真歴史、また富士フイルム製品の歴史を詳しく紹介する、世界有数の「写真歴史博物館」が見どころのひとつです。この写真歴史博物館の壁面には、さまざまな写真の巨匠たちによる驚異的な作品が展示されています。私はこの空間で見た作品に失望したことは一度もありません。入場料が無料であることもあって、近くを通るたびに立ち寄っています。
写真歴史博物館の隣には、より広くて明るい「富士フイルムフォトサロン 東京」が設けられており、フォトクラブや個人による幅広い作品を展示しています。 すこし皮肉なことに、フジフイルム スクエア内（特に写真歴史博物館）は撮影禁止の箇所が多々あります。横の入り口付近にあるフジペットカメラのネオンは撮影OKですよ！

ZEN FOTO GALLERY
禅フォトギャラリー
Zen Foto Gallery is a jewel of Tokyo’s Photographic scene. Tucked behind Roppongi station on the second floor of a wonderfully bubble-era shopping complex, Zen Foto showcases Japanese and Asia-related photography. Celebrating their 15th year in 2024, this gallery has published a staggering number of photobooks. Check out the shelves inside- it’s an opportunity to discover new artists – and will, for international visitors, perhaps prompt the purchase of a second suitcase.
禅フォトギャラリーは東京の写真界にとって宝物のような場所です。六本木駅の裏手に位置する素敵なショッピングセンター「ピラミデビル」の2階にある禅フォトギャラリーでは、日本やアジア関連の写真を中心に取り扱っています。ちなみに、この建物内にはWAKO WORKS OF ARTやKOTARO NUKAGA、OTA FINE ARTSなど、12のギャラリーやオークションハウスが集っています。
2024年に15周年を迎えたこのギャラリーは、驚異的な数の写真集を出版しています。ギャラリーの本棚は新しいアーティストを発見することができるスポットでもあるのです。帰りの電車の中、買ったばかり写真集の重さを感じると少し幸せな気持ちになりませんか？

Walking down towards Tokyo Tower from Roppongi crossing, on you’re right you’ll find AXIS Design Center, a building complex that hosts design shops, restaurants, and, on the second floor, the Photography / Film branch of the Taka Ishii Gallery.
Predominately focusing on work by (often well-known) Japanese artists, this commercial gallery enjoys a well-deserved reputation for excellent exhibitions of vintage and cotemporary work. I particularly like the gallery layout. This is not a stark, bright White Cube- its broadly-angled walls and warm lighting offer a natural path to follow while viewing the prints on display.
六本木の交差点から東京タワーに向かって歩いていくと、右手にデザイン発信拠点「AXIS」があります。AXISビルの2階にTaka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film があります。このギャラリーでは主に、著名な日本人写真家の作品に焦点を当て、ヴィンテージ作品から現代作品まで、優れた展示で高い評価を得ています。
私はギャラリーのレイアウトが特に気に入っています。このギャラリーの空間は明るいホワイト・キューブではなく、温かみのある照明と広い角度の壁面、展示されている写真を鑑賞する際の自然な順路を与えてくれます。

Shake Shack Roppongi 六本木店
As you know, I end each of these guides with a recommended spot to eat.
Maybe because it’s Roppongi, or maybe because I just wanted a heavy, greasy burger that afternoon, I’m going to suggest the New York based chain Shake Shack.
私は毎回この「Tokyo Photo Guide」の最後にオススメのスポットを紹介しているのですが、六本木だからか、あるいはその日の午後はただ重くて脂っこいハンバーガーを食べたかったからか、ニューヨークを拠点とするチェーン店「シェイク・シャック」をオススメすることにしました！
This is my usual- the Smoke Shack burger with small fries and a Lemonade.
これは私の定番メニュー、スモーク・シャック・バーガーにポテトとレモネードを添えたもの。アメリカ人の私に懐かしくて、このギザギザなポテト、本当にうまい！！

Photo spots:
This is a good part of town to explore with a camera. If you are interested in Japanese history, the former home of General Nogi is located across the street from Nogizaka station. Situated on grounds connected to the shinto shrine named for the General, the house is of simple design and said to be inspired by the soldier barracks he saw when touring Europe as an attaché. An avid horseman, his stables still stand.
六本木はカメラを持って散策するにはもってこいの場所です。日本の歴史に興味があるなら、乃木坂駅の向かいにある乃木将軍の旧宅へ行ってみてはいかがでしょうか。将軍にちなんで名付けられた神社の境内にあるこの家は、シンプルなデザインで、彼が大使としてヨーロッパを視察した際に見た、兵士のバラックにインスパイアされたと言われています。馬をこよなく愛した将軍の厩舎は今も残っています。
Roppongi itself offers a rich variety of subjects for photographers. Its hills and valleys are good for scenes of dense, urban contrasts. Around late afternoon the main East-West drag between Roppongi Hills and the station gets that classic, New York / Winogrand light. Golden-hour is dazzling, and this stretch, one upon an eclectic cast of individuals come and go, is one of the best-lit bits of sidewalk in the city.
六本木は、写真家にとってバラエティに富んだ被写体でもあります。丘と谷からなる地形は、密集した都会的なコントラストを表現するのに適しています。ストリートスナップなら、 午後5時頃になると、六本木ヒルズと六本木駅を結ぶ東西のメインストリートは、ニューヨークのようなクラシックな光に包まれます。ゴールデンタイムはキラキラとまぶしく、さまざまな人が行き交うこの区間は、都内で最も明るい歩道のひとつです。
Finally, if you’re in the mood for a longer photowalk, meandering through narrow backstreets or Aoyama cemetery towards Shibuya or Omotesando is a pleasant way to spend an hour. Heading north towards Shinjuku / Shinjuku-Gyoen is another interesting course.
最後に、フォトウォークを楽しみたい気分なら、渋谷や表参道に向かって細い裏通りや青山墓地を1時間ほどぶらぶら歩くのも楽しいです。また、新宿・新宿御苑方面に北上するのも面白いコースです。
